History

United Stationers began as the Utility Supply Company, incorporated in 1922. It opened its first brick-and-mortar retail store in 1937 and that same year published a catalog. Management saw an opportunities to add wholesaling to its operations and since 1978 the company has operated as a wholesaler. After going public in 1981, United Stationers has acquired a number of companies including Associated Stationers in 1995, Sweet Paper in 2005, and O.K.I. Supply in 2012.
