Simply Hired Releases November 2010 Job Trends Report
National Job Growth Remains Steady with Continued Seasonal Hiring
Mountain View, Calif. – December 3, 2010 – Simply Hired®, the largest job search engine and recruitment advertising network, today released its November job trends report highlighting national and local market outlooks, and industry and employer trends.
National Job Growth Remains Steady.
November was a month for consistency, as the national growth rate remained relatively constant from October to November. Nationwide job openings increased 5.1 percent, and the unemployment ratio remained moderately stable at two unemployed persons for every job opening.
Automotive Industry Looking Up.
The automotive industry showed its first sign of life post-recession, with job openings growing 19.8 percent (a 121.5 percent improvement from November 2009). Two major US auto companies, General Motors and Chrysler, recently announced plans to hire by the thousands in coming months.
Finance and Accounting Hiring Strong.
Financial specialists and accountants continued to be in demand, showing a 41.8 percent growth in job openings. “While there has been an increase in finance and accounting jobs, many of these job openings are in sectors outside the financial services industry," said Gautam Godhwani, co-founder and chief executive officer, Simply Hired. “It’s clear that the financial services industry still has a way to go before it fully recovers."
Positive Seasonal Hiring Effects Continue.
With holiday shopping well underway, seasonal hiring continued to boost the national job market. Job openings for retail salespersons increased 92.9 percent, and with 2,158 job openings, UPS became the third top hiring company nationwide.
Hiring Slows in Non-Retail Industries.
Construction (-1.3 percent), media (-0.5 percent), non-profit (-3.1 percent) and technology (-10.6 percent) all posted negative changes in job openings for the month. This annual lull in hiring is typical in November and December, as many companies without an immediate need for new employees elect to pause hiring until the start of the new year.
