Simply Hired Releases December 2010 Job Trends Report

Nationwide Hiring Slows at Year’s End

Mountain View, Calif. – January 6, 2011 – Simply Hired®, the largest job search engine and recruitment advertising network, today released its December job trends report highlighting national and local market outlooks, and industry and employer trends.

Nationwide Hiring Slows Due to Holidays.
Job openings across the U.S. decreased 4.4 percent from November. “It’s typical for the job market to slow down in the last weeks of the year,” explained Gautam Godhwani, co-founder and chief executive officer, Simply Hired. “Employers often find it easier to pause hiring and resume after the holidays.” Despite the month-over-month decline, the market remained improved from last year, up 69.4 percent.

Hiring Declines in Most Industries.
Twelve of 16 industries decreased in job openings in December, mirroring the 17 of 24 occupation categories that also experienced a decline. This lull in hiring is a continuation of the trend seen in November, when four non-retail industries posted negative changes in job openings.

Seasonal Boost in Hospitality Industry.
Although job openings in most industries declined this month, the hospitality industry showed a notable increase of 8.7 percent. The industry, which includes restaurants, hotels and similar businesses, likely experienced growth due to the holiday season.

Hiring Slows in All Metros.
Forty-nine of 50 major metropolitans experienced a decline in job openings this month, with only the Miami & Fort Lauderdale area showing a slight positive growth of 0.6 percent. This lull in hiring is typical at a year’s end.

The unemployment ratio decreased in 8 of 50 metros: Orlando, Grand Rapids, Greenville, Cincinnati, Louisville, Cleveland & Akron, San Francisco Bay Area and Den¬ver. Such decreases indicate that these job markets have become less competitive, due either to an increase in job openings or a decrease in unemployed job seekers.
