Simply Hired Releases January 2011 Job Trends Report

Hiring Off to a Slow Start in the New Year

Mountain View, Calif. – February 2, 2011 – Simply Hired®, the largest job search engine and recruitment advertising network, today released its January job trends report highlighting national and local market outlooks, and industry and employer trends.

Slow start to 2011 hiring.
After last month’s year-end lull, hiring picked up slightly in the first month of 2011. Nationwide job openings increased 1.7% from December 2010, and showed a steady year-over-year improvement of 65.1% from January 2010. “While December’s significant decrease in the number of job openings seems discouraging, this is typical for the end of the year,” explained Gautam Godhwani, CEO of SimplyHired.com. “The positive growth across almost all metros in January, just one month later, indicates that the job market is actually recovering quite steadily.”

Agriculture and automotive industries resume hiring.
Despite slowing down in December, both the agriculture and automotive industries continued to increase in job openings, with agriculture increasing 43.8% and automotive 13.8% from last month. The automotive industry, hit hard by the recession, has shown promising growth over the last three months.

Top nationwide employers unchanged.
Four of five top nationwide employers remained unchanged from last month. Taco Bell moved up to first place while Pizza Hut, also owned by Yum! Brands, moved down to second. Advance Auto Parts moved from fourth to third, while HCA dropped two places to fifth. Staples, which last appeared on the list in November 2010, held the fourth position.

Employment Impact: New Year
Following the end of the holidays, industries with cyclical hiring, like retail and transportation, have decreased hiring substantially. Job openings in retail increased only 2.6% this month, while job openings in transportation declined 14.4%. In noncyclical industries, hiring appeared to pick up again, with the majority of industries, occupations and metros indicating low but positive changes in job openings.
