What would I do as a Electrician?

If you decide to pursue a career as an electrician, you will work on the electrical systems for factories, businesses and homes. Your job might include installation, general upkeep and repairs of communication systems, controls, security systems, electrical equipment and lighting. You might work on new construction, wiring buildings, or you might maintain systems and do repairs. You will operate many different kinds of electrical equipment and various tools as you perform your job. What education, qualifications and education would I need as a Electrician?

While you might go to technical school to be an electrician, you will likely learn your trade through an apprentice program. You can take classes at a technical school, which will be credited toward your apprenticeship. You will probably need to obtain a license and will need a high school diploma or general equivalency diploma before you are hired. You will also need to maintain your license and take continuing education classes.

The apprenticeship program takes four to five years, which includes 2,000 hours of paid work and a minimum of 144 hours of technical and practical training for each year.
