The duties of a general manager encompass the well being of the entire company. While your duties will vary somewhat, depending on the industry where you work, you will oversee other administrative employees so that the business runs according to your plan. You will oversee human resources and the use of products, implement long-term goals for the company, supervise strategic planning of product development and sales and resolve operational issues.

What education, qualifications and education would I need as a General Manager?

In some cases, such as in the restaurant industry or at a small company, a general manager can rise up through the employment ranks with nothing more than a general equivalency diploma and years of experience in the industry. However, most companies want the general manager to have an associate’s or a bachelor’s degree. A larger company might even require that the GM have a master’s degree in the specific industry, such as technology, engineering or project management. You might need to attend on-going training in your specific industry.

Skills that can help you land a General Manager position include:

  • Decision making – You are responsible for the entire business and must be able to make decisions as needed
  • Business – You should have a strong business sense with a knowledge of how your industry functions, including best practices
