What would I do as a Machine Operator?
If you want to pursue a career as a machine operator, you will use large machines to move materials or products. You might work outdoors at a construction zone, on a dock or at a mining site or even underground as you extract minerals, ore or coal. You might find yourself working in a warehouse. You might use a forklift or work with a conveyor belt in order to facilitate the transport of materials. You will also need to the ability to operate your machine correctly.
What tasks would I perform as Machine Operator?
As a machine operator, you will be responsible for the following tasks: inspect the machine, inspect material prior to moving, and run equipment using foot or hand controls, steering wheel, levers or other controls. You will also need to move products or materials, track material/inventory, make minor repairs on the equipment and refer major mechanical problems to the proper channels.
Specific types of machine operators can include: conveyor operators, crane/tower operators, hoist and winch operators, underground mining loading machine operators, excavating operators, industrial truck and tractor operators, dragline operators, dredge operators and loading machine operators.
What education, qualifications and education would I need as a Machine Operator?
While you will likely not need a formal education, employers might require you to have relevant experience in the construction industry or working in a similar field. However, in some cases, the company will mandate that you have a high school diploma. You will likely receive on-the-job training that lasts about a month. In some cases, if the machine is especially complex, your training will take longer.
The International Union of Operating Engineers provides apprenticeship programs, which can increase your earning abilities. You might need to follow federal regulations implemented by the Mine Safety and Health Administration and by Occupational Safety & Health Administration, specifically related to safety.
Skills that can help you land a Machine Operator position include:
