What would I do as a Maintenance Technician?

If you decide to pursue a career as a maintenance technician, you will work in general repair and maintenance, taking care of many types of equipment and machines and even buildings. You might fix drywall or plaster, paint, work on air and heating systems, or take care of plumbing, flooring and electrical systems. You might work in a factory, retail store, laundry, office, hospital or cafeteria. You might work on woodwork, floors, doors, windows or roofs. Most jobs will not require a great deal of technical knowledge, but if a job is beyond your scope of knowledge, you will need to contact your supervisor to inform him or her. A maintenance technician does not need additional education aside from a general equivalency diploma. However, you might want to take relevant classes in technical subjects, such as math, reading blueprints, woodworking, electricity or mechanical drawing.

You might learn your trade on the job from more experienced technicians and then do simple repairs on your own. Once you have gained some experience, you can move on to more challenging tasks. In some cases, you might work with a specialized tradesman, such as an electrician or carpenter. You will need to have a solid grasp of various maintenance and repair duties.
