I absolutely loved working at Alstom. It was a fulfillment of one of my career aspirations
I absolutely loved working at Alstom. It was a fulfillment of one of my career aspirations. I was very satisfied with everything at this company, however all that was short lived as I was one of the unfortunate engineers to be laid off 8 years ago.
ProsAwesome work environment, excellent benefits. Excellent learning curve, great products.
ConsGot laid off too soon

No Market anymore for Utility Boilers.
There is low market for Boilers and Management makes one good decision and several bad ones. GE is promoting to leave the company. If money is not a priority is a Great Place to work.
ProsRemote working, unlimited vacations.
ConsIt’s more difficult to sell utility boilers.

Hardware Engineer | Melbourne, FL | Apr 10, 2020
Work hard play hard
Tough schedules/budget challenges but they fund innovation and new product design so if you like to create new products and be a part of vital infrastructure this a good place to work.

good work/life balance but not very exciting work
The work/life balance at Alstom is pretty great and the compensation and benefits are really good. But, if you are not very excited about trains and train systems, it is not the best place to work at.

Turbine Maintenance and testing Engineer
My day at works begins with testing for plant entrance requirements. Meeting daily with site leadership and briefing crew or preforming testing on my own. Usual day when testing is 12-16 hours due to a limited time at the facility. When leading a group of usually 10-12 men on an inspection when the HP/IP/LP/Gen rotors are being removed make for a long outage and 12-14 hour days, arranging for material and logistics for item coming and leaving. Work out doors in weather below zero and above 100 degrees for 45 days. Working on units that make $450/per MW hour on turbines that produce 250-800 MW.
ProsGreat work experience and training
Conslong periods away from home

Product Owner | Melbourne, FL | Nov 30, 2018
A big disappointment
Company is not well managed. Too many contracts with too few dollars ends up making you work way too hard to make schedules that are unrealistic and which will never make money. Management is firmly invested in the good-old-boy network and many are just waiting for retirement.
Prosnone
Constoo many contractors. Always chasing unprofitable contracts

Questions And Answers about ALSTOM

How do you feel about the future of ALSTOM?
Asked Nov 24, 2016
The main railways in the USA and Europe are already built. Thanks to PTC much of the signal systems is renewed. Governments are debt ridden so don't expect much new business in mass transit. The only bright spot is rail growth in developing third world countries but even that business is waning in the realm of global competition (China). It's more than cyclical the entire railway industry is in steady decline. You are likely ok if you have 10 to 20 years before retirement but if you are young you should consider looking at more modern and progressive industries where companies that have favorable growth potential, not riding the waves downward like Alstom.

Fired. They're discontinuing legacy product lines along with the people associated. They call it permanent furlough like as-if there is a possibility they will call you back.

Lack of forward thinking. Lack of management support in both manpower and physical resources. Better opportunity.

What is the work environment and culture like at ALSTOM?
Asked May 17, 2018
It is a big company has a diversity so that it has lots of nationalities (man and woman), different culture and also different methods and techniques. team work is propriety
Answered Feb 9, 2020
Depends on where you are located. In places where they are scuttling plants and product lines the tension is high. People walk on pins and needles afraid of the axe falling. Lots of back stabbing and dishonest middle managers playing games almost to see if they can get people to quit. It's not so bad at other places but still bad because the industry itself is in steady decline.
