Facilities Technician | Colwich, KS | Jul 16, 2019
Lots of promises, nothing to show in return
Originally the Colwich Cushman & Wakefield office was known as QSI Facilities. While at QSI, you would expect the same routine over and over again. Except for the constant infighting, bickering, backstabbing and lies. When I was hired over four years ago, I was told that there would be regular bonuses, opportunities to travel for clients and a great atmosphere to work. In short, if you aren't in the right group, you will drown. The two day training program, if it should be called that, is very laughable. There were new hires that didn't have a place to sit or a computer to work on. The training on their systems is horrendous, the best way was to ignore what people were telling you and figure it for yourself because no one there would have the right answer. Upper management seemed to pass down almost impossible goals, leaving the directors to be more slave drivers than the leaders they should have been. Directors are known to talk down about their subordinates to other subordinates, play favorites over other people and in general just be horrible to those they didn't like. As I mentioned at the top, there were promises of bonuses. If you had an account (or 14 in some cases) and it was profitable, then you would get a bonus based off a very small percentage of the money that was earned. Most people don't bonus. Most people are over worked, under paid and simply don't care about their jobs. While attendance is nice, it was known through the company tha

Insurance program was okay
Check in with assistant chief engineer. Log in to computer based work order system and check open work orders. Speak to co-workers about any items that needed assistance. Assigned/delivered keys to approved personal and made all changes in key tracking system. Any master keys assigned had to have top security approval. Checked in the security office for the fire panel every morning for any problems and spoke to security about any items that needed my attention. Made repairs to any door hardware. This included framing, locks, pneumatic and hydraulic door closers. Replaced lamps and ballast as needed. Escorted fire marshal and fire system contractors for inspection of remodels of alarm and fire sprinkler system. Assisted with fire department courtesy visits. Took care of all other assigned duties. Management was hostile at times and the lead tech would not assist in any way even when we were short handed. I asked for lock supplies for a remodel project to install building standard locks in the new legal departments office locks and was roughly rebuffed by the chief engineer that they were behind badge reader doors. Two days later I had to remove locks from less important offices to install in the legal department's office doors. Never replaced those locks. The lead tech snapped at me at the end of a weekly meeting in front everyone after I asked about a water fountain problem from the night before. I informed him by phone that night before that we did not have the parts. They
ProsDecent insurance, good top Ericsson security group
ConsNo attaboys but they always had something about us not doing our jobs

Lacks Multifamily Experience
Cushman and Wakefield is new to Multi Family and are not organized. I’ve been in the business over 20 years, so I say that with confidence. Their focus is more on growth, not the training and proper placement of their people. They will hire anyone, but unfortunately they don’t provide adequate training, if one doesn’t have any experience, office and maintenance. There are no standard operational procedures across-the-board from Property to Property, you basically have to figure it out on your own. If you’ve been in the industry for a long period of time, enjoy high stress and long days it’s doable. If you’re new to the industry it will be chaotic and confusing, especially if you’re going to be a floater. The managers have a lot more accounting responsibilities compared to other Property Management companies. There are so many reports and different platforms that it’s overbearing and the emails never stop…..endless emails. They have a very long process when it comes to ordering goods and services from all vendors. A Purchase Order has to be created, submitted and approved before you can order goods or schedule services for your apartment turns. Add another 1/2 day to that process, if you’re over budget. If you don’t do it in that order upper management is notified via report when you do your accounting month end and you loose points ($) when it’s bonus time. The accounting department lacks quality people, the bills are 60-90 days out and they email asking which ones to pay,

Working as a team to achieve the same goal is preferable
After many years of building, installing software, and troubleshooting personal computers and servers, I eventually landed a job in commercial real estate. My first real estate company was a reasonably small commercial real estate brokerage firm that I held the position as Computer Specialist / Information Technology (IT), meaning if the computer were to crash, it was my responsibility to fix it, and I did. This to me was a comfortable position since I had been doing this for over 15 years. Over the years, I’ve integrated graphic design into my skill set. I’ve taken a few courses, read a couple of books regarding everything from web design, to the Adobe Creative Cloud (it was called Adobe Creative Suite CS4 back then). I am now very proficient in creating logos, brochures, and even small marketing web pages using HTML5 and CSS. I love it! I want to become an expert at it. To me, the first commercial real estate brokerage firm allowed me an opportunity to experience and learn new and exciting skills that were parallel to what I wanted to achieve. Now, I currently work for a rather larger international commercial real estate brokerage firm doing pretty much the creation of marketing brochures. I’m not utilizing the skills that I’ve learned in the past and want to perfect for my future. Don’t get me wrong, the corporation is a wonderful company and a great career opportunity, and the people are extremely professional and pleasant to work with. However, in all honesty, I’d

Disappointed after working 2 years
I was so disappointed in the 2 years that I worked here. I was repeatedly told things would change or get better, only to have no changes be made. I was told by multiple supervisors that I would get a promotion when I mentioned other job offers I had received with better pay/conditions, but after rejecting the other offers they recused the promotion and offered no restitution. I worked in an office alone for a full month with no assistance or other office employees, and even ran two separate offices (in different cities) to help maintain the residencies. When I requested gas or mileage compensation, I received pushback and only was given the bare minimum (after I continued to pursue the topic). Even when I could barely afford life's necessities due to underpayment, requesting payraises was nothing short of heresy. I put in so much effort in my team and my efficiency, and worked with residents non-stop everyday and then received nothing productive in return. I wish it was different because I felt like there was so much potential but my management and the organization of the corporation just let me down so many times that it wasn't worth it to me.
ProsYou will use your personal money to pay for job necessities (due to excessive office card protocols), you will get promised promotions but never receive them, you get paid fairly at first but then never receive payraises
ConsHealthcare isn't noticeably impressive, management will never act in your best interest, you will work longer than anyone and still get underpaid, you will work alone to cover for someone making triple your salary with the same responsibilities, false business promotions, management ignores the problem until it blows up in their face.

Stay Away from C&W
This place is NO good. Just move along I promise you will find something better. The office where I worked only had myself and the receptionist. Before this company hired C&W they had a staff of 4 people. So C&W cut that in half and decided that 2 people can do the work of 4. Well actually 1, which was me, because the receptionist is stuck at the front desk most of the day. I was given a one hour lunch every day but decided to only take a 35 minute lunch because I had to much work. I did this and I was reprimanded from my site manager saying I had to take a 1 hour lunch. I know the minimum in my state is 30 minutes for every 5 hours. So the only thing I could do was work the last 30 minutes of my lunch. Management is non existent which I hated. They never come around or check in and if you ask them certain things about your position and they dont have an answer, even though they should, they ignore you. They dont tell you ALL of your job responsibilities so when you get to your work site not only do you have your main responsibilities you also are given many more tasks that you did NOT agree to or even know you had to do. C&W is not supportive at all. They say they have your best interest in mind but they really dont. I was given a task by my work site which was completely unrelated to my job title. I went to my manager and they agreed I should not be doing that task. A week later he tells me that this task I was given needs to be done because "the office manager is a very im

Horrendously underpaid and overworked
I was really excited to work at this job as it was my first out of college. When I began, I thought I had really hit the jack pot. After leaving this company, I feel like I just got out of a bad relationship. I was overworked, working for free some times because I had way more than 40 hours of work to do, yet overtime compensation was not provided. If I did not get the work done, I would get a talking to - which was absolutely ridiculous. I worked for 3 years, working weekends and nights and holidays, with no raise. I was told I was not doing well enough, even though I worked my butt off and was active in every way I could be. HR is absolutely useless and refused to help me when I was on my way out, taking weeks to even respond to me. They also refused to find a way to send me a mouse dongle that I had accidentally left in the lap top. The managers are selfish, disorganized, and create an atmosphere of "who can outdo everyone else" instead of ever feeling okay for where you are and how you are learning. They talk about the "jungle gym" and moving up - but that is a huge lie. They are particular with who moves around and it is rooted in favoritism rather than skill. This company is garbage polished in gold and staying any longer than 2 years is draining. But hey, if you want to be under paid, under appreciated, over worked, and a little cog in their giant disgusting machine, go ahead.

Run in the opposite direction!
I chose to work for Cushman & Wakefield because of their reputable name, their production content, and for my career growth. Unfortunately, this job has nearly ruined all the positive rapport I had for CW. I learned more in 6 months at my previous job, than I learned in a whole year here. Managers and supervisors will not help you learn. The expectation is that you enter the position knowing the job (regardless if its an entry level position). Tasks and knowledge are hoarded to ensure individual job security. Their is no team comradery. The work end product or results are always expected and forgiveness is hardly given. CW has excellent messaging to keep the general consensus informed - daily e-mail blasts keep everyone in the know. Unfortunately, at a local level, you’re kept in the dark. Pay and benefits are excellent. However, more opportunities and approvals for flex schedule would be appreciated. The company has excellent national programs, sponsorships, professional groups, and on demand learning partnerships; however, at a local level, I’ve yet to see any sight of their greatly touted wonders. Employee evaluations are not fair. Office politics are alive and well. Additionally, there is no privacy and you’re always being “watched”. Overall, I’ll be leaving this company with a blip on my resume and never looking back.

Bureaucratic! All work and no play makes Upper Management very happy
STAY AWAY unless you like working for slave labor and get no recognition other than the bonus of working weekends with no comp time. Highly bureaucratic, old school culture from the 1950's. No room for an advancement if you don't play those political reindeer games. The working conditions are awful, literally a cattle corral. Unless you are a broker or in sales, you are kept in a hole, far from the glitz of those who wine and dine. Steer away regardless of how much they offer b/c their pay scale based on qualifications is all a joke. Be prepared to be backstabbed with little training, poor systems, management guidance or support. If you stay within the box and clock your hours of 10 hour plus days, I guess that could be acceptable but there is no job security regardless of how well you do your job. While some employees work night and day and challenge processes and take on multiple roles, spreading you thin, others who do nothing are more highly regarded because they are hush hush and collect a paycheck.
ProsUhhh, still thinking...does wearing a suit and tie year round count, don't think so, free cups to drink water or coffee out of
Conscompensation, working hours, poor office environment, politics, bureaucratic, overall pessimistic culture, no career growth

It's really flashy at first glance with many promises
I have always wanted to work at CW, but once I got to the Portland branch I realized how unorganized their asset management dept. really was in reality. No training, no support, horrible IT, not sure who is the dept. head, open work space so you can hear everyone on the phone and not be able to think. Then the horror stories from other departments started to become apparent. There are people that have been there for years and years but it's because they have friends or family in the company already. Younger, smarter people with no connections were bullied or strong-armed out of there. It's very sad to see those with long term friendships and poor skill set have managed to remain and quality employees were not even given a second thought. There are many volunteer opportunities you'll be offered, even if you have work to do, it'll be nice to do something for the community. However, your manager will tell you that you cannot volunteer for charity events sponsored through corporate and you will have to keep saying NO, and look like you are heartless. Seen this happen not just with me but multiple other employees, very terrible environment to create. So if you want to work in a place with a dinosaur groupthink (drink the Kool-Aid) mindset this place is for you.

An excellent balance between work life and other activities. Very friendly and comfortable environment to work in.

Senior Research Analyst | Montréal, QC | Feb 1, 2015
Global Real estate company with a great opportunity to learn about the real estate market
As a Senior Research Analyst and in charge of the Research department in Montreal, I am responsible of leading and overseeing the Research function. My main responsibilities include: - Compiling market information and statistics for the office market in the Greater Montreal Area - Conduct research and collect information materials on market fundamentals, ownership, tenants, and economic analysis - Conduct research to support pitch materials, publications, reports and deliverables to the brokerage team (e.g. reports, presentations, etc...) - Primary responsibility for the write-up of the quarterly market reports (Montreal Marketbeat publications) in English and French - Preparing financial analyses for commercial leases - Managing and mentoring the Research staff in Montreal My current function at Cushman & Wakefield helped me in improving my leadership and management skills. In addition, my position requires solid research and communication skills, which I have proved to master. The hardest part of my job would be handling many requests, most of the times from different brokers and being able to answer those requests without delays. As for the most enjoyable part, it would be writing the market intelligence publications, as well as preparing and giving presentations, in addition to coming up with creative and new initiatives to improve the business and the image of Cushman & Wakefield.
