Worth the professional experience, but nothing more
The Microbiology Lab has several departments that make it up. The technical skills aren't very transferrable if you wanted to move to a company with, say, chemistry-type positions or work. But you do gain an understanding of good laboratory practices, the use and importance of analytical controls/standards, etc. But that depends on the department(s) you work in. Most coworkers come and go, but most of those who have worked within the lab for a while genuinely care about you learning how good laboratory practices work. And they show it by training you on the spot. Those are the only redeeming qualities I can think of. The company or specifically its management team leaves so much to be desired: - Overtime is very likely. When I first started, there was a "work until we get everything done" mentality. It still goes on to an extent. Most of my coworkers tend to work more than 40 hours per week because they have no choice - they're either fresh out of college or attending college. - The learning curve for doing your job: it would probably take no more than a week to learn the essentials. After that, it's nothing but repetition and you would only learn one or two new things every other week. - Advancement or transfer opportunities are minimal. I once attempted to apply internally to another entry-level position within a different lab, but I got word that I had to be in my position for at least two years before considering a transfer. Two years to go from one entry-level position
ProsCoworkers tend to be good company, On-the-job training is decent
ConsProne to overtime, Learning curve for doing your job is almost always steep, Opportunities and requirements for advancement or transfers are poor, Management changes decisions a lot and for the worse

Good for gaining experience, not for a career
Although I cannot speak about all of Eurofins since they own numerous labs throughout the world, the Lancaster location (ELLI) is definitely not a good place to develop a serious scientific career. The company itself (Eurofins) however, actually seems to actually care about employees but all the downsides about this place seem to stem from the way Lancaster Laboratories was run way before it was purchased by Eurofins. The lab itself is pretty impressive and entry level analysts have excellent opportunities to gain new skills and knowledge about working in an industry lab, especially since everything is GMP-regulated. The training is especially slow and tedious though since ELLI hires almost anyone, even those who have no knowledge of or interest in science... which describes a lot of the analysts here. The pay is also pretty low compared to the amount of work you put in and the health insurance is not very good (but expensive!) They do offer a generous amount of PTO though, even for entry level employees, and also have frequent company-wide events, usually with complimentary buffets. Despite all of this, there are essentially two reasons why making a long-term career at ELLI is not worth it. First, their focus on negative reinforcement produces a lot of low-quality work and stressed out employees. Instead of helping analysts overcome obstacles and learn ways to reduce errors, management is constantly developing new and creative ways to track and punish analysts for making e
ProsExcellent way to improve laboratory knowledge, skills & experience, PTO program, fun company activities & events

Resume builder for new graduates
Short version: great place to be if you are not very educated, want to mentally check out for 8 hours/day, and do not want to pursue promotions. Bad fit if you are an experienced scientist, want to do big things at work, and want to climb the ladder. This is a great place to build your resume for your next job. They are very open to hiring people with no experience and working with you to help teach whatever role you are hired into. However, keep in mind that a lot of things are done incorrectly/not industry standard. What you learn will not transfer to a role outside the company, period. They can be very supportive and for the most part treat their employees with respect and encouragement. With that said, management and shot-callers share the same lack of experience as the rest of the staff. It is definitely a blind leading the blind scenario. However, generally management is kind/supportive to their workers (most of the time) as long as you don’t outperform them or step on any toes. The moment you become viewed as potential competition, the demeanor changes. If you do get into management it becomes a little less supportive and turns into a competition where everyone is pushing their personal agenda and trying to secure their own footing. My advice is stay low on the totem pole and build your resume for your next job. If you are absolutely bent on a position in management, do so knowing you will be frustrated and stressed if you take your job seriously. If you can mentally
ProsEasy, no accountability, low pressure field
ConsInexperienced staff on all levels, frustrating if you are an experienced scientist

Shockingly mismanaged
Over the past several years, it has been Eurofins mission to double/triple/quadruple it's footprint in the laboratory testing industry globally. They are buying companies right and left. However, we as employees have witnessed first hand they are expanding so rapidly that they can not manage the growth. So much so, that in June 2019, they were attacked by the RYUK Ransomware that shut down hundreds of their laboratories globally for several weeks. When management was asked "why was there not a disaster recovery plan in place", employees were told "this was a once in a lifetime situation that was unexpected". However, the RYUK ransomware had already attacked several large companies and was in the media 6-9 months prior. This was not unexpected and a very real threat. Our computer systems and overall ability to function in our positions still suffer, as we continue to experience several server issues to this day. Our mailboxes don't connect, our online portals don't recognize credentials, there are delays in paychecks or we can't access the timekeeping/benefits/HR website all together. Each Eurofins location is more of a separate entity and can be looked at as it's own business with its own management team, however this affected (and still affects) the entire Eurofins network. When Eurofins buys your company, it is just like with any other buyout. Difficult transitions, lack of coordination, we didn't have access to the most basic email system, Microsoft Outlook, for 9 mont

Poor pay, good benefits, lots of turnover
Eurofins has an interesting business model: They hire folks from outside industry with relevant qualifications, train them, then put them to work in the pharmaceutical/biotech/biomedical industries as contractors at companies within those industries. I worked in what is known as PSS, their Professional Scientific Services Here's a bit about my experience there: The Pros: When I got hired at Eurofins, they flew me up to Pennsylvania where they trained me (paid) at their corporate headquarters for 4 days. They put us up in a pretty swanky Amish inn. By working as a contractor with Eurofins, I was guaranteed my position for as long as I wanted it, which is different than most contract positions. This allowed me a rare chance to work for a top 10 pharmaceutical company, a company which likely would not have hired me directly without any experience. They provide good benefits, actually better than the full-time employees get at the company I work for. And they have frequent training events where they teach us relevant skills and pay us for training. They've invested a lot into my training, and the client has as well. The Cons: The pay compared to working directly for the client is just very poor. There's a lot of turn over: I've seen most of my colleagues who worked here when I was hired come and go. The supervisor who hired me was gone before I arrived on-site, and the next manager lasted about 6 months before taking a job with another company. The fatal flaw in their busine
ProsGood training, Good culture, Good benefits
ConsPoor pay (when compared to client direct-hire) resulting in high turnover

Perfectly Fine For Entry Level, But Beware
When I first started, I enjoyed my job. I liked my hours, I thought my pay was good, my new co-workers were friendly (although not entirely professional), and I was learning a lot. I even developed some new processes that remained implanted for all the near 2.5 years that I been there. However, this company has a high turnover rate, and I could why after working there for at least a year. If you are looking to advance yourself up in the company, sincerely, good luck. There is no department better than the other. Frustration, exhaustion, burn-out exist in virtually every lab, and from what I have gathered from others - as well as experienced first hand - promises such as leadership opportunities, better pay, better hours, getting better instrumentation and equipment, getting more staff, etc. Those promises get broken, and rules made by those that do not work in the lab change too much with little to no say from the lab personal affected by them. Ironically, because of these constant problems that my co-workers and I faced on a daily basis, the level of work ethic, quality, ingenuity, and confidence in my expertise has developed exponentially. I have never been more confident in my capabilities than I am now, and for that, I am grateful to have been a part of it. Now, if you want to gain experience in a professional lab setting just to see what is out there, go for it. If you are looking for a career starter, well this may be the ideal place for it. Bottom line, jus
ProsFriendly co-workers, great insurance, get PTO immediately, get to work with liquid handling robots and DNA Analyzers.
ConsLong hour days consistently, can't rarely plan anything without the risk of missing it because you're stuck at work, poor communication across departments, pay could be better, have those whom never stepped into a lab telling what the lab can and can't do, and constantly blaming the lab for things it doesn't have control over, rarely any opportunities for advancement, have instrumentation constantly tagged out

Only stay for a year max
Not the worst company out there in regard to benefits like insurance and PTO; much better job security than other contract companies as your contract gets renewed indefinitely. However, despite this the job is only good as a temporary stepping stone as you hit the ceiling of learning new, useful skills quickly, and over time you’ll get more and more tasks dumped on you that aren’t really part of your role but are assigned to you because the FTEs from the client company don’t want to do them. The fact that you’re only a contractor and not a FTE gets brought up more and more over time, and the low pay rate you’ll get in comparison to FTEs that are doing the same amount of work, if not less, as you makes it unsustainable and the goal of most contractors is to get hired by the client ASAP. At my location, the client company is very slow to hire contractors on and often most Eurofins employees get hired as FTE only in special situations where a specific role needs to be done by a FTE due to legal or company requirements. Therefore most contractors leave quickly to go to other contractor companies that pay more, or to other clients that actually bother to hire people. There is also favoritism as well—some Eurofins PSS only got in after working as contractors for several years on end; while others get hired as FTE right out of school with only a years worth of experience, or even less. At this point my area has stopped backfilling Eurofins (and other) contractors that have left

Good place to start at for experience, but no opportunities for long term growth.
This is a good company for someone right out of college. You get more responsibilities thrown at you then most companies are willing to give new employees which offers a lot of learning opportunities. The biggest problems at Eurofins are as the lack of opportunity for advancement, huge variance in volume of work from employee to employee due to "silo company structure", and lack of communication from management on key issues. To elaborate a little more on these problem, if you come in at the accountant level there is no opportunity for you to move up to management, they always hire from outside the company. The "silo company structure" essentially means that each Eurofins business unit is treated as it's own separate legal entity and accountants are assigned 1 or 2 business units. The problem with this structure is that the size and level of integration of these business units varies widely. Some will have 12 locations and gross $10 million a month while some will have one location and barely gross $100k. This causes some accountants to be working upwards of 65 hour weeks during close while some aren't even hitting 40. There currently is not a fair way of compensating the accountants that are carrying a larger load but hopefully this will change in the future. The lack of management communication stems from the problem that the Des Moines location is basically a sister location to the Eurofins NSC's Lancaster, PA location. This means that while management is often involved in

A good place to start for recent graduates, but not a place to stay fore more than a couple of years
Overall my experience at Eurofins has been a positive one. I work with a great department with lots of very nice people who make work fun every day. I enjoy my job and I have learned a lot while working here. It's challenging, but can be rewarding. A good place for recent graduates to get their feet in the door and to gain some experience. The benefits are decent too! However, the pay and raises are pitiful. The company as a whole doesn't value experienced employees. They are more than okay with allowing a valuable employee to walk out the door and replace him/her with someone with less experience for less pay. The turnover rate is very high. All the company cares about is each department making the monthly budget. A lot of analysts have a difficult time finding equipment/materials/tools they need to do their testing every day. I think the company wants to grow so much, but they can't handle the amount of people working there currently. Departments tend to be cut through with one another and are stingy when another group uses their materials or reagents. Also, there is a lack of communication between project managers and management with analysts when it comes to what is expected and what can actually be done. They don't usually consolidate with the analysts about testing and whether or not a particular test will work. In summary, Eurofins is a great place to gain a few years experience, but it is not somewhere you should stay for life long goals. You can probably fin

Unprofessional and shady.
When I was hired on, I was told that I would be sampling water sources and analyzing the data. They made it sound very environmental-based. I was also told that I would learn the ins-and-outs of how a lab works. In the short time that I worked for the company it became very clear that I was not going to see the inside of a lab. When I asked if there was a chance to move up into the lab, upper management stated that it would take "several, several years" of field work. And while I was sampling water sources, it was more industry-based. Also, if you don't want to be a glorified delivery person, then this isn't the job for you. I would say the job is 90% picking up samples/acting as a courier (driving) and 10% sampling. It was also another detail that was left out when I was hired on. It also seemed that the company is severely understaffed. There is more work to go around than there are people to complete the work. It also seemed that management didn't really care too much that people were over worked. The pay was awful, even with a Bachelor's of Science degree. You can make the same amount that I was offered starting at Target. The worst part was the lack of professionalism. There were things that my manager told me that you just do not tell other people, other than a therapist, especially people that you've just met. Negative things about their lives and relationships, personal issues, negative things about the company, etc. I felt extremely uncomfortable. A

Mind-numbing factory work
Job is easy, though extremely repetitive and monotonous. Several workstations exist with their own simple tasks involved, though there is little rotation, so you may be stuck chopping up samples (food) or scanning them in all day for months. The lab is often behind on work when short on staff, so having to deal with the day's order as well as the backlog means you can often have quite a large workload. The work feels more like working at a factory than a lab. Unless you actively seek out information, which you get in small doses, you learn very little about what you are actually doing, which is less than ideal if you are coming here expecting "lab experience" or want to know about all the science behind it. Management is basically invisible except when the general manager looking through the window into the lab with a sour look and wondering why things aren't going quickly enough (too many customers, not enough staff). The lab manager is rarely present in the lab. Much of the opinions thrown around by members of staff gave the impression of an "us and them" sort of mentality in the workplace, which does not seem like a healthy relationship between management and staff. There is hardly any training except by your peers - understandable once you realise the high rate of employee turnover; new recruits often only make it a few days before quitting. It's quite bizarre how normal an occurrence this is treated as, it's spoken about so nonchalantly that it seems like managemen

Impersonal and unethical
Until several years ago, the (IT branch of the) company used to be conservative, but reasonable, with good atmosphere and benefits. However I will not elaborate on it since the times are long gone. Now with a bean counter F.B. at the helm in Luxembourg and a blabbering narcissist in Brussels (likes shooting videos with himself in the main role), you can expect: - Precisely measured 1.5 sausages at the company “barbecue” events; - Management instructions to pay no bonus to employees who have well deserved it, but are suspected to leave; - Having your job outsourced to India. With cost saving measures being omnipresent, if you join now, you cannot expect anything more than a meagre salary. Coworkers are trying to be nice to each other, but nevertheless the atmosphere is depressing. Obviously they are very happy leaving work in the evening. Even happier on Friday. Even if you are a business analyst, don't think that your job is safe: the upper management was very proud about opening "BA Academy" in Bangalore. While some employees could get good salaries/benefit, as a former manager I can tell that there was no consistency whatsoever. Certainly it did not depend on the employee's qualification or performance. Moreover, my options for rectifying the situation were very limited due to the inflexible and opaque budgeting process. The concept of fairness is totally foreign to the upper management. When a staff representative asked to fix a broken toilet, the managemen

If you were in charge, what would you do to make Eurofins a better place to work?
Asked Feb 7, 2017
Worst management I have ever seen in Biopharma. Start over with all new people in management.
Answered Oct 26, 2022
The advice I would offer to the management team at Eurofins is to keep the lines of communication open; along with listening to employees; show appreciation and recognition to employees for their dedication and hard work. Last but not least be willing to give employees a second chance. Use incentives to encourage employees to treat the company (Eurofins) like it is their own business and implement goals on how they would like to see the company grow.
