It was great..at 1st..
I actually enjoyed this job, especially working at the small kiosks, you’d be working alone for the entire shift. You meet interesting people, the majority are regulars, many of which I became really close with & who genuinely seemed to care about me, very sweet & funny. Majority of my regulars were older gentleman. That was probably the best part of this job; they genuinely made you feel good & made you feel special. I know that sounds odd, but I mean it in a genuine, friendly way. When you’re told by various different customers that they love it when you’re the one working, you’re their favorite cashier, & how happy/excited it makes them when they get there & see you’re the one who’s gonna be taking care of them; just them letting you know that they enjoy talking to ya, i believe it’d make anyone feel good about themselves & gives them a sense of reassurance & a bit of a confidence boost. So I guess in the end, the location makes a huge difference. As for the job itself, at THIS location: Like I said, it was great in the beginning, everything was pretty self explanatory. The thing that I found difficult was stocking the drink coolers throughout the shift before closing up. And you literally had no choice but to do this throughout your shift bc once you close, you have to close and lock shutters on the shelves and coolers outside, count your drawer down, enter a report on the computer, on top of sweeping/mopping, & all kinds of other stuff that was very time consuming. Clueless upper management
I work every shift alone. I'm expected to complete a checklist of chores during my shift, while taking care of customers. This might include cleaning out and reorganizing an outdoor shed full of sodas (that explode in the heat or cold), shining trash cans, scrubbing down pumps, washing the lot, etc. If you don't complete the list, your work ethic is questioned, despite the fact that you may have had customers non-stop. Corporate doesn't care about the stress or work load they create. If your soda cooler is down next middle of Summer, expect it to get fixed in a couple of weeks. During those two weeks, you're expected to push sales on soda. Go figure. A broken stop sign in the lot causing accidents? They'll fix it in four months. Oh, and if you spend your shift deep cleaning, stocking, shining, pulling weeds, don't expect a thank you from the district manager. Instead, he'll ask why you weren't pushing the customer survey and have you written up. I may sound like a bitter former employee, but I'm actually a current employee who is well liked by customers and co-workers. I'm recognized for the work I do by those in under management. I just take issue with the lack of work ethic by corporate management. Employees are nothing more than a number. They refuse to pay competitive wages. Employees do at least $13 an hour's worth of work, but you're lucky to push $10 an hour. It's nearly impossible to keep new hires because the expectations are unrealistic for the amount pai

Easy Job - Low Pay
The job is very easy. Register, stocking, cleaning, ect. The couple stores i worked at were very small. No soda machines, coffee, or anything like that. So not too much maintenance. A lot of the job is working alone. Will have a few hours midday with a co-worker or the entire shift alone in the evenings. Fast hectic days, or slow boring nights. Mostly deal with regulars, but as with any customer service, you'll occasionally get angry customers that go on tangents about something you have no control over. If you want hours, you'll get them on account of people consistently quitting / calling in. If you submit a set schedule from the beginning and stick by it, you can keep your fewer hours or days off if that's what you're looking for. They'll start you at minimum wage and your raises are time based rather than performance. There is 0 incentive to put in effort. If someone doesn't do their job and you have to pick up their slack, you two are still getting the same raise. You'll get a 25cent raise about every 4 months, but if minimum wage goes up, they won't adjust your pay. So basically you can work there a few years and find yourself hovering around minimum wage still. Considering all the turnover, it's pretty easy to move up. You just have to be willing to practically live at the store and be on call at all times. I had been offered several times but opted not to due to all the managers I'd seen have their personal lives and mental health shredded by the demand/hours.

Good for temporary employment
Positions are fast-paced, low paying, and stressful. The customers tend to be very rude, which mentally wear on you, but the company demands every customer be treated as if they are "royalty". While I was there, I often worked alone trying to keep the store clean while making the company $6,500 in sales in less than 7 hours. It is a very busy place, and is routinely understaffed, or overstaffed. There is no median. If you work the night shift, you are expected to do all of the work in the store alone. Those that work the day shift (management included) basically run a register, then complain that the store is too busy to get anything done outside of the register (with 2-3 on staff). Management is basically thrown in there and know little about management theories or principles. It appeared to me that advancement rarely occurs, and management pay is awful. Most of the promotions require far more responsibility, including handling and delivering large sums of cash to a bank but come with piddly pay increases. Managers work on average about 70 hours a week, yet do little around the store. I worked with a manager who worked 65 days straight because he could not get an assistant in the store. Murphy requires their managers to be on-call 24/7 365 days a year. Because of this, you officially never have a break from the place even on scheduled vacations or other scheduled time off. As for part timers, they get minimum wage pay, are offered no benefits, and are exp

Fast paced with room to grow.
As a member of management in retail, it is sometimes difficult to balance your schedule between work and home when you work a different shift every day, or when there is a call out and the slot must be filled on the fly. The compensation and benefits are good, but could be better. In this company, the assistant manager and store manager are essentially one in the same. The assistant does just about everything the store manager does, and should be a little better compensated than $10-$11 an hour. The monthly commissions for an assistant manager range from $0-$300 based on sales, which has been a life saver at times. I started as a part time cashier almost 2 years ago, now I am an assistant manager, and I am currently being trained to take my own store when an opening occurs. So, the potential to move up is excellent, you just have to put in the work. This includes, but is not limited to: providing the best customer service possible, handling whatever task or project you are charged with, regardless of your view on the matter (i.e. climbing a tall ladder to paint column poles when you are afraid of heights), and being available whenever you may be needed to help. Most of the managers I have met in the company are good people, with a good understanding of the business. I may be a bit partial to my own manager, but I truly feel I have the best of the bunch. She is great with her people, her customers, and has an even better knowledge as a Certified Training Manager than

Run away.
This was a PT job for me. I was guaranteed by the SM when I was hired that I would be making a specific amount per hour and have 25 hours per week. The first 3 months, the SM was transferred, and I was literally left with two other great employees to handle everything at the store. When the SM finally came around, I asked why my pay wasn't right, he responded with excuses, and he said "he would look into it" but never did. Fast forward to my last day (this morning), my pay was NEVER fixed even though I mentioned it to everyone of my higher ups! The current SM is nice however, she is allowing the new DM to dictate her every move with shady practices that will eventually get someone robbed, and possibly hurt. The corporate office would be wise to review the new DM, and company policies. I was left with no choice but to walk away this morning because my hours were cut again, I walked into attitude/complaining (like always), and the DM over the area forcing my SM is write me up over a mistake that the DM caused me to make. I didn't even get a chance to defend myself against the BS. People, this is literally the worst company you can work for in the industry. Have some respect for yourself and apply anywhere else...even fast food is a step up. Some might read this and think I'm bitter however, I'm not. I truly enjoyed chatting with the customers. I just feel this is opportunity for me to potentially save another person from the mistake I made when I accepted the job from this c

Great place to learn new things fast
A typical day at work involved me clocking in and helping my co-worker quickly thinning out a lengthy line of customers that wrapped around the store. After the customers were taken care of, I would have my co-worker remain on their register while I would go into the back room for supplies that were nearly depleted throughout the day. I would then stock everything in the store if we had the product in store. The line would begin to grow again and I would pause what I was doing to help with the line again. This kind of work takes high levels of teamwork and communication skills as well as speed. My co-worker would then clock out for the night and go home leaving me to finish what I could and wait for the closer to come. The management I believe was very well handled. There was always a manager on-call and only a phone call away if anything was needed. The hardest part of the job I figured out quickly is your attitude. The customers can be overwhelming, but with the right attitude they will work with you. A negative attitude such as wanting to go home, wanting people to leave or not wanting to do anything will greatly hinder your entire day and make the day seem to drag on. Second to this, the hardest part of the job can be the very co-workers because your shift relies on their attitude as well. Not every co-worker believes in teamwork. The most enjoyable part of this job is the people I would see everyday. I began to see them and think of them as family. Sometime

You will not be appreciated for anything you do!
I worked for this company as a cashier for 4 years. Then moved to a different location and quit after a couple months! I worked my butt off up there just to find out that my manager wrote me up 2 times for not doing my work in a couple day period. I just came back to work after having 2 days off to find out I have been wrote up about things he could have talk to me about but instead I never even knew I was doing wrong! It was stocking a cooler. I was missing a couple drinks I didnt know we had in the back room because you only get a few seconds if that in between customers to even look for drinksand instead of him telling me like hey you are missing these certain drinks let me show you were they are so you dont miss them again but instead wrote me up like I was a lazy worker when I most certainly am not I worked my butt off up there and did everything they demand you to do all by yourself while running a gas station alone. I would not recommend working for this company ever. I have worked 2 locations with unfair treatment from managers both locations had managers that treated you unfairly Unless you love working extremely hard by yourself running an entire tore alone while having to do everything in a certain amount of time while constantly having customers at your window then yes this is the perfect job. Sad thing is I was real good at it. Had my manager even tell me I was at my other location even beg me not.to go to school and work less hours but then when I refused

Great Comoany to work for!!
I absolutely loved working for Murphy's. There is always room for growth advancement. As a cashier the pay is a little in the low end and hours can start anywhere from 15-25 per week. However, if you are people person and a quick learner you will gain more hours quickly. I was able to help other locations as needed; especially when the pandemic hit in 2020. You get a rise after 90 days and then another one 90 days later. So the first 2 month you get 2 raises, and they are based on performance. After that its every 6 months you get a raise. If you follow all the rules and regulations not only set by Murphy's, but also by Federal, State, and local government, you will be able to move up quickly. Very strict on I.D./age verification with age restricted products. Granted thats not only to keep those products out of the hands or minors, but also each month every store gets mystery shops. A failed mystery shop could mean not only loosing your job, but also a possibility to be fined for it too. However, as said before, if you follow all guidelines for every task and age restricted items you will be able to advance quickly to management level. Its the easiest job to do, and if you like working in customer service industry then this company is worth working for.
ProsEndless Advancement Opportunities, Can be flexible with hours when needing to ask off, Pay raises on regular basis, Easy training in all task and safety procedures, Schedule, pay, requests off, and hours are all available from apps on phone, can get partial pay for work done day prior if needed before pay-day, Direct deposit only
ConsSome late nights, Some customers can be rude when asking for I.D. due to needing to guess age before hand, Can get crazy busy with only one person on schedule shift, Sometimes product shortage due to warehouses out of products, Venders sometimes rude and lazy and have to be babysat each delivery.

Murphy usa 8980 pensacola blvd great starting point
The manager at this location is very patient and considerate. Although the location is very fast-pace and very challenging. i believe if you are going to work for this company, this location will determine if you are qualified. The customers are brutal and they will try to trick you to get what they want at a lower price but it builds a strong back bone for yourself. I've learned how to defuse complications, how to manage my time wisely making sure i get all my shift duties done in a timely manor, how to properly execute tasks, and to hold other employees to the higher standard to which i was taught. I couldn't have gotten a better manager than the one at this location. Not only does he make time to teach you new things but helps you think about how to solve a difficult problem. If you make a mistake he lets you know what mistake you made and what you can do to fix it. This particular manager's work ethic makes me, personally, want to do better at my job. I would go out of my way if this manager needed help with anything just because i know he has my back and he believes in me as a person, not just an employee. This location is the second busiest locations in the district and that makes the culture very diverse. I've learned with every store there is a different demographic and you have to adapt to that demographic if you want to succeed. The hardest part of the job is always being aware of what's going on around you. There are so many aspects that need attention and sometime

I think the kiosk should at least get one drink per shift and the busiest stores should have two employees I love my job but sometimes we just do not have enough people to deal with three cars and on every pump sometimes it’s frustrating Fridays and the first and third of the month every Murphy’s should be employed with two workers at least mid shift one man in the register And the other one helping customers outside was problems cleaning maintaining and making our customers feel glad they stop by

How are the working hours at Murphy USA?
Asked Jul 21, 2016
I feel employees are entitled to breaks! OR just a place to sit down. Standing on your feet 6 to 8 hrs weighs heavy on a person's back. Also, I am a employee love all the people I work with. The management also. But I'm against selling alcohol!

How long does it take to get hired from start to finish at Murphy USA? What are the steps along the way?
Asked Jul 18, 2016
Depends on how long the new hire takes to get onboarding completed and returned (all done through email for at home onboarding) depends on how long a background check comes back which depends on the potential new hires background, howany places they live etc. Are there multiple states in which to conduct a background? Typically doesn't take but a week

Do they drug test?
Asked Jun 21, 2017
Upon hiring as a cashier no but ransoms are always lurking around the corner, to become management i.e shift lead, assistant manager, manager, etc yes, before you are given the title of ask, sm, sl, etc you have to pass a urine UA, and an extensive background check

As of Jan. 2020 Murphy USA switched to doing only random drug test. No test to hire.
