Overall Reviews at Old Dominion Freight Line

OD is a good company with growth potential
Old Dominion’s Corporate Office in Thomasville, NC had made a company wide implementation for Downsizing. I fell victim to their personnel decision this month for the Central Region or would still be employed.
ProsPay, Benefits and location
ConsInconsistency of Management, Training and exposure to Propane & Diesel fumes daily.
Dock Worker | West Valley City, UT | May 26, 2020
Good Company
I worked for Old Dominion for almost three years, Very Good Company, Good pay check and also Benefit, Good Environment, but one thing I won't like is there hours of service/shifts, but Good place to work.
Customer Service Supervisor | Memphis, TN | May 22, 2018
Training was thorough and a very good place to work
This was a busy office, but there were times when you had a chance to breathe. I learned a lot about the trucking industry, things that I did not know and people were willing to teach. Management was a little stressful because they were always thinking about the bottom line, The hardest part of the job was finding new customers and keeping them. Letting them know that our prices maybe higher but our service was great. Working with the truck drivers and managers,
ProsVery good work environment
ConsTimes when work was overwhelming.

Wonderful place to work
Processing the paperwork for the sale of tractor, trailers and company cars and trucks consumed the bulk of my day.
ProsUp grade of the computer system

Wonderful Family Atmosphere
I enjoy coming in every day to something new. Not knowing what the day will bring. There will always be issues and investigation for every claim but that is something I really enjoy. I get to help co-workers solve any issues they may have, whether it be Disability claims, Worker's Compensation injuries, Military Leave, or FMLA leave. My manager was very family oriented and was a joy to work for. I got along with all my co-workers. Even though we may not agree on every aspect we had enough respect for each other to sit down and talk out any issues we may have and come to an agreement that was foreseeable for us all. The hardest part was getting attached to the reuglar phone calls from the employees who were employed here for many many years. They have gotten sick and are not used to sitting at home alone. They just need someone to talk to. They get my paperwork in the mail that included my direct number and call just to talk. I make time for each and every one of these wonderful employees and to hear of ones passing hits the heart.
ProsFamily Oriented
Dock Worker | Wichita Falls, TX | Sep 13, 2012
Great company to work for but poor management
I normally worked anywhere from 12 to 14 hours a day which left no time for my family and I'm a single father with custody of my son.I learned about the freight business and about working in the operations side of the business instead of the delivery side. Most of my time with this company I liked the management but towards the end our new manager(who had no management experience) was coming in late and leaving early but expected us to work all day and half the night and offered no help whatsoever as our previous manager had.Overall I got along great with my co-workers,as with any job you have your people that don't want to do their fair share, but overall it was a good relationship. The hardest part of this job was never knowing how long you were going to have to be at work or what time you were going to get off.You literally could never make any kind of plans unless you were on vacation so there is no time for a family.I really enjoyed getting to know our customers and taking care of them,I loved the customer service part of the job.
Prosthe pay and benefits are excellent
Consyou cannot work at this job and have a family life

Was a good place to work until they grew
They push family atmosphere, was when I first started and as the company grew, they forgot about the people who got them there and you just became a number
Terminal Manager | Logan, UT | Oct 28, 2017
Great place to work.
I loved working there. Only reason I left was local terminal was moving to other city 34 miles away and I didn't want to commute. Great benefits and open door policy that works.
ProsGreat Benifits

If you were in charge, what would you do to make Old Dominion Freight Line a better place to work?
Asked Apr 18, 2019
Offer safety incentives
Answered Apr 2, 2021
Have leadership, supervisors, managers etc stop micromanaging employees especially in the warehouse. Treat doc workers with respect and not like children. Stop writing people up for any little petty thing it's ridiculous. Pay employees for OT hrs that they work. Help the warehouse employees instead of delegating work and complaining about low productivity and numbers.

You can easily make a career out of working at Old Dominion. It’s one of those jobs where you could go and stay there until retirement. They make a point of putting back into their employees and making their equipment as new as could be. Every year is an annual raise and bonus, which over the last 10 years hasn’t been less than a $1 raise.
