Enjoyable and fun, but stressful and strict
I personally have worked at Pet Supplies Plus for well over a year now. I started when I was younger and have gained a lot of great experience towards animals, be it to care for them, how they behave, or their history. When I first started working there, there was a GM that was amazing. He was really laid-back, nice, caring towards his employees, was nice when a mistake was made, yet he was really under appreciated. I loved the job when I first started, as I made many great friends and pried off my social anxiety, now I'm super friendly. However, the quality of the work has diminished significantly. The work I was given on a typical daily basis consisted of restocking the shelves, assisting customers wish questions, getting crickets and fish, helping people adopt animals, and taking general care of the store. Eventually, I was cross trained to be a cashier, which is self explanatory. Later on, I was taught on how to take care of the animals as a shift in itself. I would clean the cages/tanks, feed and give new water every day, inspect animals to make sure they're healthy, and even give them attention if I wasn't being hustled to move faster to get stuff done. Obviously, there's MUCH more than just all of that, but that's for the most part. The management WAS great here a couple years ago. Recently, I dislike showing up to work due to two specific managers, but I still enjoy the job. Most of the management team treats you as if they're your friend, which means a lot to

Awful business, same b.s. going on around the Nation
Im reading all these reviews an I can't believe its the same bull. Management is young plays favortism makes the non favorites very uncomfortable. The manager makes sure the latin employees stay busy an lets the caucasins do minimum to no work. (I get along with everybody, "used to" so I know an can say how it is) A specific employee is favored so much that an gets to do whatever, whenever, no work to little an 40 hours a week. They allow the caucasins to look at their cell phones on the work floor. Manager follows me personally so much that I started taking the time an date when watches me, Is always asking me personal questions an lables me to other employees. Robs my hours by making us clock out 30 to 40 minutes early on closing nights, those half hours add up to money loss for me an money gained for them. Manager is too young to be a manager is immature does not work at all just walks around all day whistling, singing provocative lyrics to pop music, watching latin employees or talking all day in office with fav employee or in groom room gossiping. Said is not a racist because it gets along SO WELL with its favorite of all employee whom is african, so assumes it is not racist. I cant go to work an not be followed if not by the manager, human surveillance whom has bullied in to doing what it says. Bullies the weak minded an despise those who decide not to brown nose. Great place to shop, not a great place to work.
I wanted to work there in hopes that I would meet other people who are just as knowledgeable as I am when it comes to working with various types of pets. I was very displeased when the girl who was assigned to train me didn't know how to spell tumor, and also received higher pay. She also only knew the basics about pet care and explained to me that in depth knowledge wasn't really needed and that the most important thing were sales. "As long as you sell the pets to people, we can get something a lot cooler in the store to play with. Say anything and get an animal out and make someone buy something. That's your goal is sales" Shortly following, a customer came in to look at some lizards... a uromastyx lizard in particular. The associate who was currently training me stated that the upkeep of these lizards were very simple, which they can be for some people. The associate didn't know the proper basking temperature, what the overall humidity level was, said the animal didn't even need water, also gave her the complete wrong substrate info! I know that just because they can go long periods of time without water doesn't mean they should. She also showed me how to take the temp for each tank, but only logged one temperature for all enclosures. LAZY. Not all reptiles/amphibians need the same temperature, this can result in death or a sick animal. I have been working with reptiles for years and I was VERY concerned for the animals welfare inside and outside of the store. Shortly afte

horrible place to work!
if you want to work with high school kids who don't care about the job, then this is the place for you! if you want to work for a company that has ZERO ethics and doesn't care about you as an individual or what goes on in their stores, this is the place for you. if you want a manager who just wants to be everyones friend, and will give special treatment to someone who is lazy and gets away with everything, this is the place for you! hands down, the most RIDICULOUS place I have ever worked. way too much drama, and people being given far too many chances when they should be fired. they treat the animals terribly, always forgetting to get fresh greens for the animals that require them. not feeding them properly, and not cleaning their habitats. the "small animal" person has next to no knowledge about animals, like most of the staff. the store is NASTY!!! so dirty!!! store has had a lot of issues with mice and TONS of expired product. nobody there has any experience with animals for the most part, so don't ask any of the kids any questions, they won't know how to respond. manager likes to hire cute girls, even though they are horrible at the job or have zero experience. and if you are cute, you can pretty much make your own schedule! if you're a hard worker, you will always be in trouble and the managers will try anything to make you feel terrible. the store manager spreads rumors about his own employees! the work environment is totally hostile, all the younger kids will pretty m

Alright job, select few "good to work with" employees
Typical day working here isn't too bad. Tasks are easy but time consuming. I have learned a lot at this job in a lot of animal information on any animal we carry, tons of pet products and specifics on certain areas that require for in debt knowledge of animals. As well with being on stock with unloading truck and stocking shelves, being a cashier, taking care of any animals, and properly closing the store to the full requirements (sweeping, mopping, straightening, taking out trash, ext). Management is okay in some areas, for order based and getting store related such as getting in product or animals and keeping up to have product is on key, but to the management consequences on fults from employees is very unnoticed in my opinion. Said before a select of co-workers are fun and enjoyable to work with some others not as much unfortunately. Which leads to the hardest part of the job. This job is easy, what makes it hard is the lack of discipline in some of the employees who do not fulfill their duties when on the clock. This job falls on a team effort so when one employee does not complete their tasks correctly or non correctly it is left for the other shift to take over. I say non correctly because this has been a major issue just in the last couple months where basic tasks are not getting done in a timely manner, and they are being poorly done. Which it is all put onto my hands along with a co-worker that may or may not be on staff at the time. Which doing the tasks is not har

Corporate sucks.
I've been a cashier for over two years and once corporate took over, I noticed the work place going down hill. The only thing good is how nice your coworkers are and the balance in the work environment as well as lenient hours. However, corporate expects way too much from their young employees and doesn't pay enough for anyone to put effort in the work they do. Every meeting we get these "off the leash" papers where they talk to us like we're children and provide "activities" for us to do. Secret shoppers was the biggest waste of money I have ever seen. Three secret shoppers per month, get a good grade or possibly lose your job and only get paid mininum wage. I didnt obtain my raise until I passed five "pet exams" two years later. My pay went from $8.25 to $8.50 (virtually nonexistent) but was still expected to meet a certain sale goal when on register. We used to have to ask every single person a million questions like "hello, how are you? Need help finding anything? Oh I see you bought dog food, want these treats to go with it? Etc" but all that accomplished was an annoyed customer. We're expected to accept a return that lacks the product and receipt. For example, a man says his fish died but doesn't have any proof. Common sense told us to deny this customer, which we did, but he came back after complaining to corporate and flaunted his gift card in our faces. But this same corporate had no idea what ick was when a customer complained about her fish dying from it

Really fun place to work but starting pay could be much better.
I’m writing this review 2 years late but this was my first job ever when I was 18 years old (now I’m 22) I started from the beginning by I mean the store was empty and all of us who were hired, helped to put up shelves and eventually stock them and just getting the whole store ready for opening day. (We got paid during all those hours spent which were nice checks too lol) Now just like with any other retail store, you have your amazing regulars who’ve never given you a hard time and some others where you just have to put up with them. My time at PSP, the management there was always..caring, outgoing, reliable, funny and just great people to work with on my 7 hours shifts and the majority of the team members you got to work with were always wonderful people as well and the overall atmosphere is something I miss dearly..along with the animals! I often got to see dogs, some that were new and a lot of them regulars too and their owners were always really nice to see. Occasionally I got to see cats, a few times I saw, a hedgehog, guinea pigs, snake, parrot, bearded dragons..oh and a even a pig once!! There was always tasks to be done even when it might seem slow. For example if there’s truck, you break down product on the pallet and stock shelves where need be, straighten and tidy up products too, clean around the registers, making sure there’s no expired sales signs (especially after the day it expires on cause somehow we always miss a few and ends up in confusion on the cust

Insulting poor treatment by corporate
Anonymous surveys which hold a store teams work or job security in the balance, are actionable. When someone litigates this it will be changed. Devaluing loyalty is a dangerous policy. When there are no ways to validate the statements, identify the truths from the targeting, it demoralizes a team, or encourages personal campaigns of lies. We lose great managers - the stress is very bad. If a Psp staff works with the public is politically active, especially in their stores community, there is backlash, especially in animal rights issues. Most of us are. My mgr works her tail off, is sincere, not fake, and a strong advocate for r his team, she will not allow verbal abuse by rude “neighbors but that also gets him in trouble. Holding a team/store hostage via anonymous or generic names and a totally unsubstantiated star ratings system is insulting to both a hard working team, and the regular people who shop the store. The manipulation of surveys is company wide, always has been, and visiting team members from other stores hint that a struggling store can fix all Surveys with boosts from friends and families? Which proves just how wrong the surveys are as a measuring of anything valid. If your a honest person you will get screwed - and if anyone tries to defend or explain the real system, you are considered to be making excuses. What is the difference between the reasons why something happens, and the excuse FOR what happens? The corporate people don’t listen, and

Horrible management, fun place to work.
I worked there for about 3 months, I really enjoyed my job. there’s so many interesting people that walk through those doors and getting to know their animals is always a treat. Your fellow employees are all so kind and its a great environment to work in. The management not so much.. they’ll give you the quick jist of things like how to bag crickets and fish, how to greet customers, etc and the rest it’s as you go. They don’t tell you anything on how to do things they missed out on, you either must ask or get stuck in the moment with a customer. I was a former employee who worked about 20-26 hours every week, the management will do their best at first with your schedule but the top manager really doesnt care when you prefer off or even when they shorten your hours and you ask for more, they won’t do anything about it. then they released me of employment through text. saying my hours were too hard to work with. I guess if you can only work every single week day after 12pm and worked 16 hours through just saturday and sunday, they would give me supervisor hours and pay me as an associate, when i was working as a part time bather and took all their nail trims that walked in, but those hours are too complicated.. they then gave the second reason and it was for many complaints. You’d think a good management would talk to their employee about the first complaint, not let them supposedly pile up and then REFUSE to tell your former employee what those complaints were. Great First Job
This was my first job right out of highschool and it taught me the most. The management was more than helpful with my training in different pet store aspects. Rather than making you feel like you had to know everything about all animals they would want you to focus on one thing. There I discovered my interest in birds. After that I was interested in reptiles. Then I found myself in dog/cat food health. Now, I am full of random animal facts that I actually use sometimes with my dogs and cats. As a cashier I was in charge of making sure the face of the store was nice and tidy. I would be sweeping, cleaning windows, and wiping down shelves. I was in charge of returns and discounting items that would not ring up properly. I would have to count down my drawer and organize my coupons by distributors at the end of each shift. I'd have to make monthly sale tags and organize them by aisle so the team and I could get them out the next day in a timely fashion while also taking down expired sale tags. As a stocker I was in charge of special customer orders, making sure the store was organized, taking customer service calls, and checking up on the animals. Some days I would help out with loading and unloading deliveries but management would have another group of back stockers that were in charge of the back room. Every three to four months we would have an inventory "party" and have pizza before the counting of every single fish and dog bone in the store. I would start countin
