Overall Reviews at Steak n Shake
Not a good place to work
Lack of good management! There is no direction, no authority, no leadership, no discipline, no respect from workers towards customers, no ethics, and no teamwork
ConsBad place to work
Fun atomosphere and great people
Some of the people I worked with were some of the best people I knew. Others that I worked with weren't anything to write home about. Management was trash until someone got fired. After that things went up and up. I was up for a promotion and customer service was at some of its best. Once you get settled in, it's a great workspace.

The people are nice
The people I worked with was extremely friendly and enjoyed hanging out outside of work as well as at work. They are always willing to help when you are behind so you can get out on time.
Over working an employer can be very frustrating
After months and months of working, employers got unemployed from the building shutting down and everyone liked their job and co-workers would even ask to stay extra hours and come the next day even tho it was their off day because stake N shake was an excellent restraunts.
Not enough pay for work expected
Paid for 50 hours a week. Typically more like 60. Always short staffed, very little opportunity to be a manager when you are always stuck in a position. They need to pay employees more to up retention. Constantly losing staff to higher paying jobs.
Always under staffed extremely stressful, totally unorganized
You are expected to do multiple jobs on service pay.work with half the amount of staff that is necessary to have this place run properly. So everyone does twice the work for as little pay as possible. Manager cuts your pay and hours so that your pay check is always short. But he looks good to corporate because the hours look low. They literally run their employees in the dirt. On one shift I would wait tables, dress my own food, run dishwasher bus person and do cashier and host all at the same time during my whole shift. They don't care about employees they only want migrant or sweatshop workers. Can't keep staff at all because of how horribly managed this place is.
ConsAlways under staffed and over worked
Alot I can say about this job. six in a half years there too much to say.
Awful, do not work here
The managers are often as incompetent as the workers, and training is a bare minimum experience with new hires having to figure out a lot for themselves. The workers are often rude, not inclusive, and harrassment goes unpunished
Very fast paced
The Steak n Shake I worked at was a very fast paced and often stressful job. As long as your coworkers did their jobs as best as they could, it was tolerable. However, employees were hired and fired/quit so rapidly, it was almost always a stressful environment.
Not Living Up To Their Mission or Values
No clear directions, senior leadership is dishonest but more than that, does not know what they want to do. They underpay compared to competition in and outside of the restaurant and hospitality (and other) industries. Especially with their corporate employees. They intentionally isolate and foster an unhealthy environment of paranoia amongst colleagues, direct and indirect reports/supervisors. It's nuts over there right now. Field, HR, training, operations, senior leadership - everyone is paranoid, looking to leave, and leaving. Not recommended as a company of choice. Benefits are very basic. Corporate works within a 24/7 environment just as operations works in it. Open every day of the year (not just in operations). People don't even know when others leave or start - which is basic HR 101. It's pretty embarrassing. The VPs within HR / related departments are just awful. Glad to be moving on. In 10 years of experience, I cannot relate the company's culture to any other I've worked in or for (either as an employee or vendor).
ProsYou gain experience
ConsCulture is awful, Leaders isolate their staff, promote a 'lead by fear' environment, which comes from the way that the senior leaders/owner, Run away
