Overall Reviews at White Castle

Crew Manager | Chicago, IL | Jun 17, 2019
Nice job if you dont mind rotating shifts
Great job and awesome pay and benefits for full time crew managers. Its a fun place to work, except the overnight shift which is pretty scary. Hopefully one day corporate reconsiders closing at night because its too dangerous. All the crazy drunks and crackheads get to come in at night and act however they want and its scary because at night its only 2 people on the shift if its no customers around to help if anything serious happens then thats your life sacrificed for White Castle to make only a few bucks while the big, big bosses are home asleep safe and sound in their beds. -__- Anyway, as long as you get along well with your team members your job is more manageable. On the downside, hardly any hours for part-time team members, and no benefits or scholarship opportunities for them, because they are not full time and you can only become FT if u are a crew manager. Also, FT employees only get 35-37.5 hours, not a full 40 hour week and it sucks that they are strict about going into overtime. The only day we are closed is on Christmas day but we do get paid for that day and other major holidays. All team members also get a Christmas bonus check.Team members also get paid double on major holidays. Nice job for high school and college kids, but I wouldn't recommend applying if you dont plan to become a crew manager because otherwise you'll get hardly any hours.
ProsFree lunch, life insurance, weekly paychecks
ConsOpen overnight, no OT, dont get full 40 hours
Night shift premium | Louisville, KY | Mar 16, 2013
a hard working and fast, friendly environment.
A typical night on weekdays were smooth sailing and hard work completed same functions every night such as, frymaster cook, cleaning and sanitizing entire store, scheduled cleaning on hood vents and all major appliances, stock inventory help count and unload inventory trucks. For the most part co workers were suportive in the procedures, hardest part of the job was weekends night shift when we were over packed and not enough help or some co workers not carrying there own duties was a set back! Management was hard workers and strived to be the best they can be without being too unsupportive. Most enjoyable part was knowing that the managers could count on me to complete any action they wanted me to without hesitation because i thoroughly knew what the job consisted of and how to do every action performed, and job security was i must say awsome at that branch for me because they wanted me 37.50 hrs a week everynight with one manger and one other coworker till 2 am.
Prosgeneral manager and i had an awsome job relationship, and i was able to recieve up to 37.50 hrs a week with full company benefits.
Conspicking up the extra slack for some co workers as in any job did not do their fair share, nights made it difficult to perform everyday activities but were managable!

Good job starting out, but not a career if you have a college degree in a hard science
The work was relatively easy to learn. None of the tasks were too difficult. The biggest issue with the company was the lack of consistency. Line workers were rotated out weekly, so it seemed like you were learning a new name every few days. The line also had many issues. Parts of the line would break and cause you to perform extra work until maintenance fixed the issue. On some days, these issues would persist and lead to some really long work days. These issues seemed to get worse when the pandemic happened. Because of shortages, mandatory Saturdays were added every week starting in late February and are still continuing. I left because these Saturdays were looking to continue well into the next year. There are also not many opportunities to advance your job at the Distribution plant. I only had 2 opportunities to be promoted in my 2 years there and one of those opportunities came 2 months after I was hired of full time and I was still new. I was completely unqualified for it, but was told that it would be a learning experience. They did pay me for my time to go to that interview though, so that was a plus.
ProsDecent pay, mostly easy work
ConsMandatory Overtime, Not much advancement, inconsistent

Productive and Competitive yet Memorable Employer to work for!
White Castle is one of the cleanest and best restaurants to become a part of. They value the history well and value those who keep the trend going! They provide a great source of training in a very serious yet professional Manor. You do not have to be afraid to start you career, because they teach you friendliness and train you to be the best! At white cast you will find that everyone makes you feel at home there! Not to mention you get a free meal or two a day! You do not have to worry about taking your lunch and they do provide healthy eats as well. Fun fact "Did you know white castle burgers are cooked on hydrated onions with water, which is a great healthy way to prepare a meal". Also their patties have 4 holes in them which provide a more roomy way of draining and give you a non greasy burger! Not only are they a fantastic place to work, but they are a FANTABULOUS industry to accompany and join. In this company you will learn that the sky is the limit "meaning, you can go above and beyond". Your provided with benefit options and an opportunity for pay advancements as well!
ProsPay increases, benefits, team efforts, success, friendliness.
ConsLeaning to work very quickly, which is actually a healthy lifestyle!

Fast paced work is fine for most, but troubling customers is always a problem.
I worked 40-60 hours a week at White Castle and I can honestly say that I worked very hard at the job. Unfortunately, fast food service is not my cup of tea. I can handle the fast paced environment and adapt quickly, but the customers in the location I had to deal with were far too much. Since my schedule was all over the place, I would have to work bar rush hours which is fine for me. The location that I was stationed at was the worst White Castle in all of Minnesota and I could see why. The type of customers you get were display many acts of harassment to the employees and other customers. I had multiple of situations where people would just puke all over the place and that is something I didn't want to deal with anymore. Being called names by the customers and being disrespected so much was taken too far. I'm sure other White Castle situations may be better than mine, but unfortunately for mine, it was not. White Castle I would say is not a bad place to work at, it was just the location that I was at which was ranked the worst.
ProsFast paced but totally workable. Adapting and learning is easy.
ConsVery low pay for how much you work for. Depending on the location you work at, you may deal with terribly behaved customers.

Great for a temporary job and benefits, bad for everything else
The company really needs to work hard on fixing their utterly broken training program which very often fails to adequately train team members to be functioning members of the workplace. There is a very high turnover rate, and lack of communication and direction from upper management makes it that much less desirable of a place to work. Of course, there are good and bad managers, but a lot more often in this company there are bad managers. Plenty of times I was given the cold shoulder when I did something wrong, and adult managers who are supposed to be running the place lack greatly in communication skills. I could go on with more issues that this company has, but that could go on forever. The plus side is that they offer great benefits for even entry level team member positions, and there are plenty of opportunities to advance in the company. You could go several different routes in advancement (management, clerical, maintenance, etc.) But overall, I've learned throughout my extensive time being employed here, is that if you want to stay there's always a job for you.
ProsBenefits, job security, advancement
ConsLack of communication, lack of transparency, bad training program, it's customer service

Do not work here!!!
My review, a complaint is being filed with EOCC, against this store. That's all I'm going to say about this location, because of review guidelines. I would give management a Zero, but i have to give at least 1 star. Stay away from this store!!! Management scolds employee's in front of customers. This store has no business being open. When I go to other white castle locations, they are amazing, compared to what I had to endure when working with this particular Store. I was wrongfully, fired and I am fighting it!!! I don't want my job back anymore, I just want my complaint to go through with the labor board, and the EoCC because 2 managers sabotaged my job, and used my disability to harass me, so bad that I had to walk out. They fired me told me not to EVER come back into this store. 2 female managers, started it and I have been targeted before due to documentation stated with HR. HR. doesn't care. Stay away from White castle in Powell, Ohio. Their food is not all that great, that's also why they had a grease fire a few weeks ago. They don't change their grease traps.
ProsFree food slip, Paid vacation, weekly pay. It's only good for supplemental income. Don't make this a career, unless you know how to advance your skill-set here.
ConsManagement doesn't care, and neither does human resources.

i do NOT recommend this job
they were disrespectful, especially the managers. some team members were nice. the rest were stuck up and so rude. i was nothing but nice to them and in the beginning , the first week, there's a bunch of fake smiles then after they will talk non sense about you behind your back and it wasn't just me. i would hear them talk non sense about others too. it wasn't a peaceful place to work at. and its not only the white castle that i'm talking about its all of them , because most of the white castle workers are friends with the workers at other locations and they move around back and fourth (pick up shifts at other white castle locations ) through the app. and i'm not saying this due to the fact that i didn't get along with the manager. i'm saying this because they just go around stabbing each other in the back and they're so disrespectful to the customers. on top of that , the hours they give you are terrible. they hire people all day and that shortens the crews hours. people and so would i, would get 4-15 hours a week. THAT'S RIDICULOUS. i recommend for you not to work there for YOUR sake. only good thing is free food on break .... and 15% discount on your days off.
Prosfree lunch and 15% on days off
Consthe whole job in general. don't recommend

Loved the pay, bad management
The only thing good about this job is that it paid $11 an hr and paid weekly. The management was really bad. It took three weeks to get my first check because they couldn’t get my direct deposit right and they had to send me checks when I finally did get my check it was about 4 days after payday. There were a few very nice people that worked there however once the third shift leader come back I couldn’t stand it there. Most all of the workers make fun of the customers and I just didn’t like that.Lastly I called in one night 2 1/2 hours before my shift and they put me as a no call no show and suspended me for three days. It was embarrassing because I even had a doctors excuse and when I went in they made it known to everyone that I was getting suspended. Management couldn’t figure out why people were leaving and never showing back up because there reasoning for suspending is ridiculous because they require at least 4 hours in advance. Not only that it’s embarrassing getting suspended for a no call no show when that defiantly was not the case! Bad management and the place was filthy! I got pics to prove it!
ProsWeekly pay & Higher pay
ConsBad management & Filthy store
Operator | Cincinnati, OH | May 10, 2018
fast paced work environment
operate cashier, and cooking apparatus, drive through window, stocked food items and supplies, cleaned work station, performed janitorial duties to eating area, restrooms and parking lot, provided customer service. I learned how to handle irate customers, and grew personally in handling social situations. learned what my limitations were as well as strengths. The hardest part of job was handling the volume of orders at peak times of business, and getting used to third shift hours, adjusting to not sleeping during usual sleep hours, and having to do errands and pay bills and other business during afternoon hours, which were short hours of the day before reporting to work, Third shift I liked and enjoyed, very peaceful yet hard on the body, due to change in sleeping habits. Management was fair, very much stuck to schedule unless someone could not or did not show up.
Prosfree lunches, decent pay, good benefits for a fast food place of business.
Conssometimes people could not get the customer's orders correct, other times had to deal with the homeless, drunks that at times would cause problems for the customers as well as workers.
