Everything You Should Know AboutAccounting Jobs in Houston, TX

If you’re looking for employment opportunities, our guide to accounting jobs in Houston, TX can help you land the job.

What educational background do you need to land an accounting job in Houston?

Generally, in Houston, employers require an associate’s degree in accounting or a related field for entry-level positions like bookkeeper, although some data entry positions allow for only a high school diploma. Some companies require higher degrees for entry-level positions like senior bookkeeper, such as a bachelor’s or master’s degree in accounting or a related field.

More advanced positions such as staff accountant require a bachelor’s degree in accounting. Many employers prefer applicants who are certified public accountants or can provide proof that the applicant is working towards becoming a CPA. Positions with seniority like audit supervisor, managing accountant and senior auditor require a bachelor's degree in accounting or finance. For these senior accounting positions, some employers prefer CPA candidates with a master's degree in accounting or those who can provide proof they are working towards certification. C-level positions like a chief financial officer or comptroller require a minimum of a master’s degree and CPA status.

You must submit proof of continuing education to maintain your CPA status. The requirements for continuing education, also called CPE in the accounting industry, vary by state. In Texas, you must complete 120 hours of CPE credit on a rolling three-year basis, according to the National Association of State Boards of Accountancy (NASBA). You must complete 20 hours per year. You renew your CPA license annually by the last day of your birth month. The CPE reporting period ends on the last day of your birth month during a three-year rolling period.

The only required coursework includes four hours of ethics coursework every two years. There are credit limitations, including 20 hours for instruction, which must be at a level higher than an introductory level college course. Only a 50 percent maximum every three year reporting period can be nano learning; non-technical courses; and other certifications like Certified Financial Planner, Certified Fraud Examiner or Certified Internal Auditor. You can earn 10 hours each year for publishing accounting related articles. There are no additional local requirements for Houston.

Many online courses offered through NASBA apply to the Texas CPE requirements. The site includes notification of applicable classes and the number of credits for which each qualifies. Other options include attending one of the many accounting or finance conferences in Houston or taking classes online through the Houston chapter of the Texas CPA association.

Most Houston companies require in-person interviews. This is because telephone and video interviews do not clearly show body language, an important indicator in veracity. You must sometimes perform two interviews: one for information, the second for drug testing. The hiring manager will typically inquire about your accounting and finance experience, the financial computer programs you have used, times when your actions reduced company costs and questions that test basic accounting knowledge. These including having you define terms like working capital or explaining different types of special ledgers.
