What educational background do you need?

The type of education you will need depends partially on what sort of human resources job you are looking for.

Can I do this with no degree?

It is typically impossible to get a human resources job with absolutely no degree.

GED/HS diploma or associate

Some companies hire people with a high school diploma, but this is rare. Usually, people with this level of education will be specialists who do things like interview employees, explain procedures, monitor compliance, and report to HR managers. Like a high school diploma, hiring people with an associate degree is also rare.


If you want to be a typical human resources employee who manages a branch or department, you will need a bachelor's degree. This is the standard educational level required for the majority of HR jobs. Depending on your school, you may want to pursue a degree in Business Administration, Management or Human Resources. However, even those with other less related majors like anthropology, economics and philosophy can find success in human resources.


A master's degree is not required for all types of human resources jobs. However, it can help to make you a more appealing candidate in this competitive career, especially if you want to be a head manager responsible for planning policies and regulations.

Ph.D. or other higher education

Completing a Ph.D. program typically is not required for the average human resources worker. Usually, people pursue a Ph.D. degree if they hope to one day be in a major management position overseeing a vast HR department.

In addition to basic education, many employers prefer human resources professionals who are certified in certain programs. The two most common certifications are the Professional in Human Resources (PHR) and the Certified Employee Benefit Specialist (CEBS) certifications. These require participating in programs, taking tests and meeting work experience requirements.

What are common jobs in this area?

Of course, no guide to human resources jobs is complete without an explanation of common job types. Generally, human resource jobs all involve the same types of work, but the level and responsibility changes over time.

Entry level

Most entry-level jobs in human resources are for HR assistants. They may help out with things like completing payroll, screening applications or conducting training seminars. This is a great way for people interested in human resources to get some experience in their field.


Mid-level human resources jobs tend to be in a supervisory capacity. People in these positions may be called a manager, administrator, compliance officer or staff coordinator. Pitfalls of working in human resources

Though human resources jobs can be extremely beneficial, there are occasionally some downsides. If you do not have the right personality for it, it can be quite challenging to constantly have to act as a mediator between employees. The job can be fairly high in stress at times, yet at other times, it can just be repetitive paperwork.

Human resources jobs may also prove challenging for people who do not like multitasking or office politics. In this job, you have to stay on top of things all the time, step in to resolve disputes and juggle many different tasks that are all high-priority projects.
