What educational background do you need?

Can I do this with no degree?

It is typically impossible to get a human resources job with absolutely no degree.

GED/HS diploma or associate

Some companies hire people with a high school diploma, but this is rare. Like a high school diploma, hiring people with an associate degree is also rare.


If you want to be a typical human resources employee who manages a branch or department, you will need a bachelor's degree. However, even those with other less related majors like anthropology, economics and philosophy can find success in human resources.

Ph.D. or other higher education

Completing a Ph.D. program typically is not required for the average human resources worker. Usually, people pursue a Ph.D. degree if they hope to one day be in a major management position overseeing a vast HR department.

In addition to basic education, many employers prefer human resources professionals who are certified in certain programs. The two most common certifications are the Professional in Human Resources (PHR) and the Certified Employee Benefit Specialist (CEBS) certifications. These require participating in programs, taking tests and meeting work experience requirements.

Entry level
