What is a resume?

An accountant resume contains a brief overview of your skills and qualifications. Think of it as a one-pager with the sole purpose of highlighting your expertise as it relates to the job for which you’re applying. You’ll need to update it and your cover letter each time you apply for a new job. A Curriculum Vitæ (CV), which is a chronological recording of your experiences, is different. It remains static regardless of the position and spans several pages. It may be necessary to create a CV when applying to an accounting role at one of the Big Four, which includes PricewaterhouseCoopers, Deloitte Touche Tohmatsu, Ernst & Young and KPMG, the country’s four largest accounting and audit firms. A CV may also be necessary when applying to an investment firm, or similar, but most employers will request a resume only. Although there’s no singular way to present your information on a resume, Cornell University contends there are specific components to include.

Researching an accounting resume

Take some time to review professional accounting resume examples before you write. This will help you identify what language to use and which skills to include. A great accounting resume will be easy to scan, enabling potential employers to pick out key details quickly. You’ll also need to include accounting resume keywords and action verbs throughout. A resume building tool will make this step easier and speed up the process. Pay special attention to the theme you select and ensure it gives a professional air, from font choices through colors. If you’re using a template which enables you to categorize information under the Cornell guidelines, component will be its own section to aid in this.

  1. Heading: Begin by creating a simple header with your name and contact information.
  2. Objective or Qualifications: Include either your goal for the position or a very brief synopsis of your qualifications. If you’re using the space for qualifications, make note of licenses (CPA, CFA, CMA, etc.) here. If you’re using an accounting resume objective section, try to keep it to a single sentence which includes the job title for which you’re applying, skills keywords and related experience.   3. Education: Mention the institution, major, minor(s), year and GPA if noteworthy.

  5. Relevant Courses: If you didn’t major in accounting or took classes related to the industry you’ll be serving or the specific roll you’ll be taking, make note of those as well. Your professional licenses may also be added to this section if you didn’t include a qualifications section earlier in the resume.
  6. Experience: List traditional job experience, internships and volunteering.
  7. Skills: Make sure your accounting resume skills section matches the skills listed in the job ad. Include areas of expertise, from taxes to payroll and reporting, languages you speak, and types of software you’re familiar with, such as QuickBooks, FreshBooks, Xero and Zoho. Don’t overlook soft skills, communication, problem-solving and time management, as they can help set you apart from other candidates.

  • Irrelevant Experience: Including experience that isn’t relevant to the job will only detract from the core information and make it harder for the hiring team to see why you’re a good fit. Evaluate each statement you include and consider whether it’s something which truly speaks to your ability to perform well on this particular job. You may be a whiz when it comes to taxes, but if the job to which you’re applying has a payroll focus, mentioning anything else simply makes it cluttered and hard to follow.

  • Unexplained Gaps: Empty spaces in your employment history aren’t necessarily a bad thing but you don’t want employers left wondering why you weren’t working. Be honest about gaps and whenever possible, use them to demonstrate how they’ve helped prepare you for this role.

  • Disorganization: Employers need to be able to scan the page. If it’s a mess, they’ll pass you over. Use a template or a resume builder to keep things organized.

  • Grammatical Errors and Typos: Particularly in a field like accounting, attention to detail matters. Run your work through dedicated software to catch any issues.
