Summary

These are full-time temporary positions not-to-exceed 1039 regular hours (about 6 months) in a service year. Positions may be terminated sooner or extended depending on management needs. Individuals selected under this vacancy announcement may be eligible for rehire in subsequent service years.

The typical season is Mid-April thru Mid-October, but can be variable during these months due to weather conditions, project needs, or funding. Anticipated Entry on Duty: Mid April

Responsibilities

Operates a busy visitor contact station, Wilderness permit desk; oversees day to day functions of the Wilderness permit system at the Zion Canyon or Kolob Canyons Visitor Centers. Frequently patrols the park's wilderness trails, routes and campsites. Performs remote technical canyoneering patrols, rappelling, and technical rope rescue techniques including self-rescue. Issues wilderness permits to the public, explains wilderness rules and regulations, makes personal contacts in the field and supplies information on resource conditions along the trails and canyons. In addition, performs visitor contacts on front-country trails, as well as numerous projects to protect and manage park resources.

Travel Required

25% or less - Travel may be required to attend trainings, conferences, workshops, and/or field visits. You may be required to obtain a government charge card for travel purposes.

Technical Rope Skills required (See Selective Factor information in 'Qualifications' section).
You will be required to submit to a drug test and receive a negative drug test result prior to appointment. In addition, this position is subject to random testing for illegal drug use.
You will be required to operate a motor vehicle as part of your duties. You will be required to submit a Driver's License and Driving Record in a State sealed envelope or submitted directly by the State, at your own expense.
You will be required to wear a uniform and comply with the National Park Service uniform standards. A uniform allowance will be provided.
You may be required to work on-call, evenings, weekends, holidays, overtime and shift work.

Qualifications
To qualify for this position at the GS-05 grade level, you must possess all of the following minimum qualifications by close of the announcement:

SELECTIVE FACTOR: This position performs technical rope skills used in canyoneering, climbing or mountaineering. Incumbent must have the skills to independently; complete and lead canyoneering or climbing routes, ascend and descend ropes, create and evaluate anchors. Sufficient experience must be included in your resume to evaluate this requirement. Candidates who do not meet this requirement by close of this announcement will receive no further consideration for this position.

  • AND -
EXPERIENCE: At least one full year of specialized experience comparable in scope and responsibility to the GS-04 grade level in the Federal service (obtained in either the public or private sectors). This experience includes activities such as: Experience may have been in technical, administrative, or scientific work, fish and wildlife management, recreation management, law enforcement, or other park-related work. Examples of qualifying specialized experience include, but are not limited to, the following:
Park guide or tour leader.
Law enforcement or investigative work.
Archeological or historical preservation research work.
Forestry and/or fire management work in a park, recreation, or conservation area.
Management, assistant, or program specialist work involving the development and implementation of policy related to protection, conservation, or management of park areas or similar operations.
Your experience descriptions must include hours per week worked.

EDUCATION: Successful completion of at least a 4-year (120 semester/180 quarter credits) course of study above high school leading to a bachelor's degree with 24 semester/36 quarter hours of related course work in natural resource management, natural sciences, earth sciences, history, archeology, anthropology, park and recreation management, law enforcement/police science, social sciences, museum sciences, business administration, public administration, behavioral sciences, sociology, or other closely related subjects pertinent to the management and protection of natural and cultural resources. You must include transcripts.

COMBINATION: Education and experience may be combined to meet the specialized experience requirement.

Volunteer Experience: Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.

You must include months, years and hours per week worked to receive credit for your work and/or volunteer experience. One year of specialized experience is equivalent to 12 months at 40 hours per week. Part-time hours are prorated. You will not receive any credit for experience that does not indicate exact hours per week or is listed as "varies".
Education

To qualify based on education, you must submit a legible copy of transcripts from an accredited institution with your name, school name, credit hours, course level, major(s), and grade-point average or class ranking. Transcripts do not need to be official, but if you are selected for this position and you used your education to qualify, you must provide official transcripts before you begin work.

If you are using education completed in foreign colleges or universities to meet qualification requirements, you must show that your education credentials have been evaluated by a private organization that specializes in interpretation of foreign education programs and such education has been deemed equivalent to that gained in an accredited U.S. education program; or full credit has been given for the courses at a U.S. accredited college or university.

Travel, transportation, and relocation expenses will not be paid. All travel, transportation, and relocation expenses associated with reporting for duty in this position will be the sole responsibility of the selected employee.

If interested, there may be opportunity to occasionally participate in Wildland fire fighting if eligible and qualified. You must pass a drug test, meet specified levels on annual physical fitness tests, and pass periodic medical exams for wildland fire personnel, commensurate with current incident management qualifications to participate.

Physical Demands: Work involves extensive periods of standing and walking, in some cases over rough surfaces or inclines, carrying backpacks, tools, rescue equipment, etc.

Working Conditions: Work is performed in a setting in which there is regular and recurring exposure to moderate discomforts and unpleasantness, e.g., high or low temperatures, confined spaces or adverse weather conditions.
