PRIMARY JOB FUNCTION:
Abbott is currently seeking an experienced government contracting attorney, who will be responsible for counseling attorneys and contracting personnel on government contracting laws and regulations and collaborating with cross-functional teams to effectively resolve complex issues. The ideal candidate will also have experience in the healthcare industry, particularly related to anti-corruption and U.S. fraud and abuse laws.
The successful candidate will possess strong knowledge of U.S. government contracting laws, rules and regulations specific to the U.S., as well as industry leading-practices and standards, and demonstrated expertise in analysis of relevant laws and guidance and counseling clients and drafting and negotiating complex government contracts. Experience in government contracting is required. Experience in health care industry related to fraud and abuse and anti-corruption are strongly preferred. Core job responsibilities include:
Serving as the legal “subject matter expert” on a full range of government contracting matters and other applicable laws, providing leadership, guidance and support to clients and other attorneys in Legal Division;
Staying on top of changes in laws and regulations related to government contracting and anti-corruption;
Developing, periodically revising, managing and assisting in the implementation and maintenance of the Company's government contracting, anti-corruption, and fraud and abuse policies and procedures and ensuring business/organizational adaptation and compliance, as needed; and
Interacting with and providing legal and strategic guidance to senior management and functional organizational leadership.
Position will report to Senior Counsel within Legal Regulatory & Compliance
Counsel will not have direct managerial responsibilities, but will coach and direct assigned support staff (administrative assistants, paralegals) in their responsibilities

Influencing Skills: Build strong relationships with business partners to tactfully influence and gain their support to drive desired outcomes. Represent Abbott externally to [customers, suppliers, competitors, trade associations or government agencies]; and [resolve legal issues using negotiation skills and legal expertise/engage in external influencing efforts].
Possess a Juris Doctor degree from an accredited law school, demonstrate a strong academic background, and be admitted to a US state bar and in good standing, and have, or be able to obtain, licensure to practice law in Illinois
4+ years of experience practicing law in a prominent law firm, large corporation or government agency
Health care or other relevant industry experience required
Ability to handle multiple projects in fast-paced environment and exercise sound commercial and legal judgment
