Location: 410 W. 10th Ave (Doan Hall-N235) - Gastroenterology, Hepatology, and Nutrition

Position Purpose:
Coordinates and provides patient support services such as scheduling appointments, answering telephones, greeting patients and registering patients in a patient care area.

Duties and Responsibilities:
The PSA performs duties or a combination of the following duties based upon assigned area:

Welcomes patients and visitors by greeting them upon their arrival.
Checks patients in for their appointment.
Collects, verifies and updates patient demographics and insurance information/documents and enters in the registration and scanning application.
Collects co-payments and records in the system in accordance with office policy.
Maintains control of cash box and prepares daily bank deposit. Completes end of day system/application reports.
Contacts insurance companies and obtains registration or procedural pre-certifications as required by the patient’s healthcare insurance or managed care providers.
Monitors length of patient’s wait and notifies the appropriate party (i.e. nurse, lead or manager) of excessive wait times as defined by clinic.
Totals and collects any fees associated with the visit and records all payments received into system.

Checks out patients at end of the visit to include:
Ensuring all tests ordered have been performed or scheduled.
Scheduling return or follow up appointments as necessary.
Printing patient after visit summary (AVS) as necessary.
Answers phone calls, utilizes ACD line where applicable, and schedules patient appointments using the appropriate scheduling application.
Coordinates contacting patients and scheduling for bumped appointments as directed by management for rescheduled/cancelled clinics.
Requests and handles referrals and medical records from referring offices for new patient appointments.
Performs data entry of outside orders into the appropriate system or application as appropriate.
Tracks daily visit statistics for manager as needed.
Performs general clerical tasks related to office work such as checking for prior medical record numbers.
Assists with the training and orientation of new staff.
Travel may be required to accommodate staffing levels at other IM clinical facilities.
Other duties as assigned.

High school diploma required.

Excellent interpersonal, communications and organizational skills required.

Proficient computer, keyboard and typing skills required.

Customer Service experience.

Experience in a medical office setting.

Knowledge of CPT and ICD-9-CM coding.

Experience in medical release of information correspondence.

Data entry experience with basic understanding of insurance and billing procedures.

Experience working with patients and their families.

Knowledge of patient’s rights and HIPAA
