Where We Began
Reed Construction was established by Thomas Reed in 1893, the year of the World’s Columbian Exposition in Chicago. Since our inception, we have provided owners, developers and facility managers with high-quality construction solutions.
Today our firm, led by fifth generation President and CEO William T. Birck, is a full-service construction firm with extensive expertise in general contracting and design-build. It is the responsibility of a Project Engineer (PE) to maintain an organized system of project documentation as well as archive and distribute project documents, including drawings, construction documents, RFIs, and submittals. The PE should effectively communicate with fellow project team members to maintain visibility on project accountabilities for multiple projects at various stages. In addition to the functions of this role, the PE is also responsible for upholding Reed’s core values of: Strive to Always Improve, Communicate Openly and Honestly, Go Above and Beyond, and Work as a Team.
The Project Engineer would be primarily responsible for:
Assist in development of project schedules as required
Assist in budgeting preliminary documents
Solicits vendors for pricing; performs follow-up calls
Perform estimates and takeoffs
Maintains various information logs (e.g., purchasing, estimating, RFIs, submittals, punch list)
Prepare a submittal log in accordance with the project drawings and specifications. Monitor and expedite submittals in accordance with the submittal log and project schedule. Follow through as required.
Maintain tracking system to expedite construction materials and equipment
Distribute punch list to subcontractors.
Attend and participate in project meetings, generate meeting agendas, record and distribute meeting minutes.
Collect closeout documents from vendors and subcontractors. Upon completion of project, compile and send closeout information to owners.
Perform additional assignments per Project Manager or Superintendent's direction.
Distribute new or updated drawings and specifications
Become proficient in project management software, including:
Enhance Reed Construction’s reputation with the Client/ Architect/ Subcontractor through your performance.
Expand your network by occasionally planning and attending appropriate social and business events.
QUALIFICATIONS / KSAs

Excellent time management skills and ability to multitask and prioritize work. Keen critical thinking ability and problem-solving skills. Strong communicator – both verbally and in writing. EDUCATION AND TECHNICAL SKILLS
Bachelor’s degree in Construction Engineering, Construction Management or related field. Equivalent experience may substitute bachelors degree in some cases.
0-2 years of relatable experience in construction, estimating, or direct labor preferred
Working knowledge of techniques, drawings and specifications, building materials, construction equipment and required standards applicable to discipline.

Goal-oriented – ability to react quickly to changing circumstances and still achieve the desired end results
Proactively looks for potential job site issues and addresses any problems promptly and professionally
Calm and professional demeanor, even in high-pressure situations

Excellent verbal and written communication skills; ability to produce thorough documentation of each project
Experience with project management software is a plus (Procore, On-Screen Takeoff, Timberline, Salesforce, Microsoft Project)
Construction industry knowledge preferable
Ability to handle multiple demands while keeping a positive and results-focused attitude
Excellent computer skills, including Microsoft Excel, Word, Outlook and PowerPoint.
TRAVEL, WORKING CONDITIONS/OTHER
This is a full-time, salaried position and may require some travel to project sites. The working conditions will primarily be in a typical office environment, at times occasional project site visits may occur. Personal Protection Equipment (PPE) is provided and should be worn in all required areas.
