The Information Sciences and Modeling group (A-1) is looking for outstanding scientist and engineer candidates in the fields of applied mathematics, machine learning, computational science, operations research, electrical engineering, or control theory. The researcher will lead projects that focus on solving difficult problems for the design, operations, simulation, and analysis of complex infrastructures systems. The candidate is expected to work in an interdisciplinary environment with significant collaborative research. A successful candidate is expected to publish in peer reviewed journals, present their research at conferences and workshops, manage, lead, and develop programs in these areas.
This position is part of LANL’s Advanced Network Science Initiative (ANSI). ANSI performs basic and applied research focused on modeling and understanding the nation's critical infrastructures, such as electric power and natural gas. Our expertise covers statistics, stochastic methods, machine learning, control theory, dynamical systems, discrete and continuous optimization, statistical physics, and graphical modeling. We ensure the scientific and technological validity of our approaches by working closely with physicists, engineers, mathematicians, statisticians, computer scientists, and economists through interdisciplinary collaborations. Our typical customers include DHS, DOE, DOD, and other national laboratories. Our work typically requires close collaborations within and outside the Laboratory. Candidates are expected to lead projects in the following areas:
National Infrastructure Simulation and Analysis Center (NISAC)–This is a project funded by the U.S. Department of Homeland Security to conduct modeling, simulation, and analysis of the nation's critical infrastructure. NISAC analysts assess critical infrastructure risk, vulnerability, interdependencies, and event consequences. It is a joint project with Sandia National Laboratories and Pacific Northwest National Laboratories.
Department of Energy—The candidate is expected to work LANL’s applied energy program office to lead and develop projects within the U.S. Department of Energy’s Office of Electricity. Programs and projects include control and optimization of networks under uncertainty, analysis of extreme events, design of resilient networks, analysis of interdependent networks, and machine learning for infrastructure systems.
What You Need
Minimum Job Requirements:
A record of leading high impact, innovative research as demonstrated by recent publications in peer-reviewed journals, patents, or contributions to major reports in one or more of the following areas: machine learning, mathematical programming, industrial engineering, power engineering, control theory, computational science, or applied mathematics.
Demonstrated ability to secure funding for multi-year projects
Demonstrated ability to develop and sustain strategic collaborations and partnerships with other leading organizations
Demonstrate ability to work effectively in a collaborative and multi‐disciplinary scientific environment
Significant project management and program development skills
Experience mentoring and managing junior staff
Demonstrate excellent oral and written skills
Experience in solving practical science and engineering problems, especially in the context of infrastructure networks
Programming experience with Java, C++, Python, MATLAB, or Julia
Software engineering experience
Mathematical modeling experience with AMPL, GAMS, JuMP, or Pyomo
Experience with commercial and open‐source solvers (CPLEX, Gurobi, IPOPT, etc.)
Ability to obtain a DOE Q and SCI security clearances, which generally requires U.S. citizenship
Education: A Ph.D. in computer science, electrical engineering, chemical engineering statistical physics, operations research, applied mathematics, or a related field

The Advanced Network Science Initiative (ANSI) is one of the focal points for the Laboratory’s infrastructure optimization and control capabilities. ANSI is collaboration between the Laboratories’ Analytics – Intelligence and Technology (A), Computer – Computational and Statistical Sciences (CCS), Theory –Theoretical Division (T) Divisions, and the Center for Nonlinear Studies (CNLS).
