University Recreation (UREC) is accepting applications for a Coordinator of Sport Clubs and Inclusive Recreation.
The mission of UREC is to promote and advance healthy lifestyles through educational programs, participation opportunities and supportive services. UREC’s qualified staff is committed to excellence and responsive to the developmental needs of their participants. UREC looks for people who are passionate about teaching and working with students. UREC’s award-winning main facility is 278,515 square feet of recently expanded and renovated space.
The Coordinator of Sport Clubs and Inclusive Recreation serves as part of a two person unit under the supervision of the Assistant Director of Sport Clubs and Inclusive Recreation. This positions main focus is developing both formal programming and drop in recreation opportunities for traditional and non-traditional sports, adaptive recreation, and assists in coordination of departmental special program offerings that seek to engage 100% of the JMU Community. The position currently supervises over 45 student employee and managers that supervise many spaces in the main University Recreation facility and the University Park facility. This position also serves in a support role for our 51 Sport Clubs as needed.
Duties and Responsibilities
Recruit, hire and manage a diverse student staff including recreation assistants, recreation mangers, and other inclusive recreation staff. Establish learning outcomes based upon student development principles and staff needs. Design appropriate interventions and conduct assessments for all trainings. When assigned by the Assistant Director, provide leadership and mentoring for a graduate assistant establishing schedules, expectations, and conducting regular meetings and evaluations.
Plan, implement and coordinate year round Inclusive Recreation offerings for the department including the management of a comprehensive informal recreation program. Plan and implement offerings in non-traditional sports, adaptive recreation and department-wide special events designed to attract participants from across the spectrum of the JMU community. Establish learning outcomes based upon identified student needs, design appropriate interventions, and conduct assessments for all programs. As assigned by the Assistant Director, execute selected components of an innovative and comprehensive Sport Club program.
In conjunction with the Assistant Director, manage fiscal resources of Inclusive Recreation to make recommendations for purchasing of equipment and supplies in addition to managing student employee wage budget. Also works to administer the risk management plan of Inclusive Recreation programs.
Be a collaborative player on the Programming Unit to develop innovative programming and services that reach beyond each individual program area to fill the gaps to achieve the goal of 100% participation in University Recreation facilities, programs, and services. Be a part of the weekday evening supervision team to provide student mentoring at all UREC facilities on a rotating basis.
- Bachelor’s degree in Exercise Science, Physical Education, Recreation, Sports Management or related field required, Master’s Degree preferred
- One year of professional experience or two years of Graduate Assistant experience in working in recreation program required, in a campus recreation setting preferred
- Experience in part time staff hiring, training and supervision required, in a campus recreation setting preferred
- Experience creating collaborative programs preferred
- Knowledge of inclusive recreation programming preferred
- Knowledge of collegiate sport club programming preferred

The Annual Security and Fire Safety Report contains information regarding campus security and personal safety including topics such as: crime prevention, the university police law enforcement authority, crime reporting policies, disciplinary procedures, protocols for the immediate notification of students and staff upon confirmation of a significant emergency on campus and other matters of importance related to security and safety. The report includes statistics for the most recent three-year period of reported crimes that have occurred on campus; in certain off-campus buildings or property owned or controlled by JMU or its affiliates; and on public property within or immediately adjacent to and accessible from the campus.
The Annual Security and Fire Safety Report includes campus housing fire statistics for the most recent three-year period, a description of each on-campus student housing facility fire safety system, the number of fire drills held during the previous calendar year, policies or rules on portable electrical appliances, smoking, and open flames in student housing; and procedures for student housing evacuation in the event of fire along with other fire safety information.
