Aspire is a growing nonprofit organization of the Massachusetts General Hospital. We offer a variety of high quality therapeutic programs and services that focus on helping children with high cognitive autism spectrum disorders and related profiles develop increased self-awareness, social competency and stress management skills.
The Group Leader is a seasonal position working at Aspire’s Explorations Program for teens aged 14-19. The Group Leader will be responsible for overseeing a group of approximately 6-8 teenagers and providing support during community outings and structured program activities as well as facilitating their participation within the group. Tasks of the role include: leading program activities; implementing interventions, supports, and strategies for program participants; leading mid-summer conferences and communicating with families; maintaining accurate timekeeping and record keeping; and complying with program policies and procedures. The group leader must be willing to work closely as part of a group and collaboratively with others. Prior experience working with adolescents on the autism spectrum is strongly preferred.
The Group Leader reports directly to an onsite Explorations Assistant Program Manager and Program Manager. Also, the role is overseen by the Director of Teen and Adult Programs. Program activities include: weekly community field trips, recreation and team building activities, cooking, trip planning, community service, boating, budgeting, social groups, mind/body groups, and self-awareness groups. The Group Leader will help to lead and support specific activities (i.e., cooking, trip planning) as well as plan activities. This is a 40 hour per week paid position for 6 program weeks that includes 40 hours of mandatory and paid training prior to the start of the program; along with mid-summer parent conferences, and one program overnight. Pre-program and ongoing training and supervision is provided by experienced clinical staff.
Enrolled in, or graduate of, an undergraduate program in: psychology, social work, occupational therapy, speech and language pathology, and other mental health related fields.
Prior experience working with adolescents with autism spectrum disorders strongly preferred.
Strong interpersonal and team-building skills.
Openness to receiving feedback on interactional skills with families, participants, and staff.
Desire and ability to work in outdoor settings
Basic computer skills. MS Word required; knowledge of Excel, PowerPoint, and Outlook helpful.
Good basic writing skills.
Ability to work independently and be flexible.
Excellent organizational skills.
Strong attention to detail.
