Environmental Health and Safety Intern

This position is designed to be both educational and practical. In this position, the intern will learn how to take skills acquired in school and apply them in a manufacturing environment under the direct supervision of the EH & S Manager and EH & S Coordinator.

Responsibilities

Environmental:
Assists with environmental assessments to ensure compliance with environmental programs and requirements.
Provide technical assistance and guidance when environmental inconsistencies or non-compliance issues arise.
Work in conjunction with EH&S Manager and EH&S Coordinator to maintain the highest level of environmental compliance.
May assist with investigations and dealing with environmental issues and community environmental complaints.
May assist with actions required to correct or prevent violations.

Safety:
Must abide by and support all safety policies and procedures.
May work with managers, supervisors, employees, consultants, agency officials and others in an effort to reduce adverse safety, health, property and negative environmental exposures on company property.
May assist with the scheduling, completion and follow-up activities of Environmental Health Safety (EHS) audits and process hazard analysis
May provide project input concerning process and personnel safety requirements included in generally accepted engineering standards such as Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA), National Fire Protection Association (NFPA), American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME), American Petroleum Institute (API), Compressed Gas Association (CGA) and the American National Standards Institute (ANSI).
May assist the EH&S Manager and EH&S Coordinator with managing employee health requirements such as audiometric exams, first aid supplies, first aid and cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) training and blood borne pathogens programs.
Coordinate and/or conduct safety training for all new hires, current employees, employees from temporary agencies, contractors, vistitors, etc.
Will assist with the development and updating of safety processes and procedures as necessary.

Training:
In conjunction with the EH&S Manager and EH&S Coordinator, facilitate employee environmental training, particularly for new hires.
Motivate and train other employees to meet and exceed all environmental compliance goals and expectations.
Complete all required training (Safety, Health, Environmental and HR) as required, complying with all established deadlines.

Job Demands/Skills:
Ability to handle multiple priorities, provide detailed work, sound reasoning and meet required deadlines.
Ability to be flexible in duties and analytical processes.
Possess excellent communications and interpersonal skills.
Ability to take direction, be self-motivated, organized, and detail-oriented.
Proficiency in MS Office: Excel, Work, Power Point, Outlook.

Work Conditions:
Ability to work consistently on a concrete plant production floor and in adverse environmental conditions.
Ability to bend, lift (minimum 50 lbs unassisted), stand, kneel, and move for extended periods of time.
Ability to have dexterity of hands and fingers to utilize and operate appropriate equipment and tools.

Qualifications:
Attending accredited University for degree in Environmental Science, Safety, or related field.
