The Department of Environmental Health and Safety (EH&S) supports and advances the teaching, learning, and research activities of Stanford University by providing and coordinating programs and services that foster a safe and healthy campus community.
We are currently seeking a degreed engineer, or senior level safety professional to develop and implement University safety risk engineering programs that protect the University’s research and general campus operations. This new position serves as the campus’ expert in areas including, but is not limited to, electrical safety, slip/trip/fall prevention, fall protection, hoisting and rigging, high pressure systems, as well as institutional safety management systems.
The Senior Safety Engineer takes a key role in advancing the University’s safety culture by developing and supporting programs that provide effective hazard assessment and control, safety education/ training, work planning, incident investigation/ lessons learned, and integrating “Prevention Through Design” in new research and facilities. In addition, this senior-level position provides technical safety and health guidance during University-wide emergencies.
Working under consultative or self-initiated direction, the Senior Safety Engineer will:
Develop, manage and/or support programs, systems, and processes that ensure the overall safety and health of all faculty, staff, students, and visitors, with a special emphasis on prevention of serious injuries / fatalities.
Recommend and implement improvements in existing management systems, research/operational processes, facilities design, operating procedures and equipment to minimize risk and potential loss.
Identify and evaluate hazards and unsafe conditions that could be present in the wide variety of University environments. Develop management systems that control these hazards ongoing while providing cost/benefit analysis to Campus Leadership as needed.
Investigate incidents, injuries, and complaints that use methods including root cause analysis to determine causal factors, and to recommend possible control measures / risk reduction strategies to ensure ongoing risk management.
o Develop and disseminate lessons learned to affected parties, and campus-wide where appropriate.
Develop and deliver safety training programs to research, academic, and operational populations.
Act as a University technical resource for emerging trends in safety and risk management; interpret new regulations and determine impact on campus operations; and represent campus in regulatory compliance visits or as other regulatory interactions may warrant.
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:Education and Experience:

Bachelor’s degree in a scientific, engineering or allied field and five to ten years of progressively responsible safety engineering experience in support of research and development and/or other technical operations.
Master’s or terminal degree in engineering sciences or related disciplines, or risk management / business administration.
Certified Safety Professional (CSP, Board of Certified Safety Professionals)
Associate Risk Management (ARM)
Professional Engineer (PE) License in Mechanical, Civil, Electrical, Materials Science, Nuclear, Physics Engineering with a focus in safety / risk management.
Team Building Experience / Skills
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
Strong knowledge of physical safety hazards relevant to skilled trades and research activities, with safety proficiency in areas including but not limited to electrical work, energy safety, machine guarding and fail-safe machine control systems, pressure systems, equipment use and human factors, fall prevention/protection, material handling, hoisting / rigging, and confined space entry.
Expertise in safety management fundamentals such as quantitative/ qualitative risk assessment, job safety analysis, incident investigation, training and communication, risk assessment and reduction, and facilities and proprietary equipment design review.
Ability to develop metrics that effectively communicate safety management progress, and cost versus benefit, to University leadership.
Ability to maintain current knowledge of, anticipate new and interpret specific government agency requirements (statutes, regulations, licenses, and permits) and university policies.

Ability to maintain a valid non-commercial California Driver’s License, and drive University Class C vehicles.
Physical ability to perform duties while wearing required respiratory equipment (must pass required medical exam);
Ability to crawl, bend, climb ladders, and lift and carry heavy equipment (40 lbs. or more).
