Lockheed Martin Energy Storage is commercializing a new class of flow battery technology for low-cost, grid-scale energy storage. We are seeking an exceptional research engineer with expertise developing electro-chemical energy conversion systems for industrial applications. The successful candidate will have a strong background in applying fundamental electrochemical principles towards solving technical challenges in an industrial environment. Through a combination of modelling, experimentation, and analysis, the candidate will develop new design concepts aimed towards improving the performance and durability of this exciting new technology. The individual will work closely with a team of scientists and engineers to develop a mechanistic understanding of degradation modes observed during endurance tests of prototype devices. The successful candidate will excel at identifying critical technical risks and designing targeted experiments to assess identified risks. Work activities will include analytical and numerical modeling, planning and execution of technical experiments, test method development, method validation, analyzing data, and writing technical reports. The individual must be able to engage deeply in technical problems and communicate effectively with a diverse team of scientists and engineers. Experience in directing junior team members is expected. Candidates must possess excellent communication and project management skills.

- BS in a field of materials science, mechanical engineering, electro-chemistry, chemical engineering, chemistry, electrical engineering, physics, or related field of study.
- Technical proficiency in electrochemistry and physical methods for the characterization of electrochemical systems and components
- PhD in a field of materials science, mechanical engineering, electro-chemistry, chemical engineering, chemistry, electrical engineering, physics, or related field of study.
- 2-7 years of technical R&D experience post PhD
- Expertise leading root cause and corrective action projects
- Proficiency using Comsol or other multi-physics modelling tools.
- Working knowledge of flow batteries, fuel-cells or other electrochemical energy storage devices.
