Stanford’s Vice Provost for Student Affairs is seeking an Associate Vice Provost (AVP) for Inclusion, Community and Integrative Learning who will join in shaping the future of the Division of Student Affairs and the university’s long-range vision for the student experience. Student Affairs’ mission is to educate students to make meaningful contributions as citizens of a complex world. The Division is a diverse organization of professionals dedicated to the development and well-being of all Stanford students and to supporting the university’s educational mission.
The AVP for Inclusion, Community and Integrative Learning serves as a member of the Vice Provost’s executive team and participates in leadership of divisional and university priorities in support of all Stanford students, with a near-term priority on advancing the division’s five-year focus areas defined in Our Most Important Work: Equity & Inclusion, Community & Belonging, Mental Health & Well-Being, Integrative Learning, and House in Order.
The AVP provides strategic leadership and management of the inclusion, community and integrative learning units within Student Affairs exercising delegated authority for policy and programmatic decisions. These units focus on equity, inclusion, belonging, and student learning largely outside of the classroom and often through engagement in diverse student communities, organizations and networks that include alumni, faculty, and staff. These units oversee Stanford students’ preparation for meaningful careers and the development of purposeful leadership to effect positive change in the world. The area also facilitates care for the many diverse student communities on campus, proactively fostering positive, inclusive community development and facilitating problem-solving when complex community issues emerge. The AVP serves as a prominent, visible institutional leader at Stanford and within the higher education community.
The AVP is responsible for an annual operating budget of $10.7 million and achieves goals through a professional staff of approximately 70. Reporting units include: BEAM Career Education, the Centers for Equity, Community and Leadership (the Asian American Activities Center, Black Community Services Center, El Centro Chicano y Latino, the Queer Student Resources Center, Markaz Resource Center, Native American Cultural Center, Women’s Community Center), Diversity Education, the First Generation Low Income Office, Student Activities and Leadership, Fraternity and Sorority Life, the Stanford Band, and Stanford ASSU professional staff.
As a member of the divisional executive team, provide leadership and vision for the Stanford student experience. Oversee the management of areas of responsibility. Direct staff and lead the achievement of the goals and vision of the inclusion, community and integrative learning units. Responsible for hiring and retaining staff, career coaching, personal development for direct reports and accountable for the performance of employees.
Advise executive management on programmatic and policy development in the areas of purview, including counseling and influencing university leaders on issues that have university-wide impact.
Provide strategic direction, create strategic plans and oversee the long-range vision, planning, implementation and assessment of a variety of programs and initiatives, primarily for students, that promote inclusion education, career education, student development, and student leadership, as well as community programs focused on thriving communities and affinity groups.
Champion major initiatives and lead complex high-visibility process redesign and innovation projects in the areas of purview that impact student and staff experiences and academic department functions related to students. Propose and manage the implementation of complex and significant programmatic change.
Direct policy development and the design and implementation of administrative operations, processes, systems and workforce planning to ensure maximum effectiveness, inclusivity, and equitable access for students across the university.
Create a dynamic, inclusive management environment for a group of diverse student affairs professionals within the AVP reporting line.
Evaluate the performance of the organization and develop plans accordingly.
Responsible for the financial viability and success of the organization. Responsible for committing University resources with limited review by senior management.
Make decisions for programs that provide critical support services for the University's mission of teaching and research. Oversee allocation of all resources.
Work extensively with alumni to support students while they are on campus and as they prepare for life after Stanford. Focus on community care when complex issues involving communities and groups of students emerge.
Serve as the campus leader in coordinating response to critical incidents involving student concerns such as campus climate, student governance, equity and inclusion.
Education & Experience:

Bachelor’s degree and at least ten years of progressively responsible leadership and supervision including administrative and financial management experience. Advanced degree, preferably a doctorate, and prior leadership experience in an academic institution strongly preferred, including experience in diversity and inclusion, community development and integrative learning.

Exceptional respect for and understanding of the needs of a highly diverse student body at both the undergraduate and graduate levels.
Outstanding oral and written communication skills. Advanced financial expertise in budget planning and financial forecasting.
Exceptional interpersonal, negotiation and political acumen skills. Ability to influence people, solve problems, trouble shoot, think creatively and resolve conflicts.
Expert analytical and problem solving skills.
Strong knowledge of industry standards, trends and regulatory requirements.
Ability to relate to a variety of constituencies, including students, parents, faculty, community groups and alumni, and to appreciate the interests and concerns of each group.
Subject matter expertise for areas of responsibility.
Knowledge of student development theory and of concerns, challenges, interests and issues currently prevalent among undergraduate and graduate students, with a strong background in advising.
Proven ability to work in an inclusive, proactive, values-driven and consultative way with faculty, staff, peers, students, parents, and the broader external community.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS/ WORKING CONDITIONS*:
Constantly perform desk-based computer tasks.
Occasionally stand/walk, reach/work above shoulders, use a telephone, writing by hand, lift/carry/push/pull objects that weigh up to 10 pounds;
Rarely twist/bend/stoop/squat, sort/file paperwork or parts, lift/carry/push/pull objects that weigh 11-20 pounds.
Work evenings, as needed and occasionally on weekends.
