Job Summary:
An Environmental Compliance Officer (ECO) ensures that an organization adheres to environmental laws and regulations, minimizing its impact on the environment. They play a critical role in sustainable business practices and help manage environmental risks and liabilities.
Key Responsibilities:
- Regulatory Compliance:
- Monitor and understand local, state, and federal environmental regulations.
- Ensure the organization's operations, products, and processes comply with relevant environmental laws.
- Maintain up-to-date records of compliance and reporting.
- Environmental Audits:
- Conduct regular environmental audits and assessments.
- Identify areas where the organization can improve its environmental performance.
- Prepare reports on audit findings and recommend corrective actions.
- Permitting and Documentation:
- Manage the application, renewal, and tracking of environmental permits.
- Ensure proper documentation of environmental compliance activities and incidents.
- Maintain records of hazardous materials and waste disposal.
- Training and Education:
- Develop and implement training programs for employees on environmental policies and practices.
- Raise awareness about environmental responsibilities and best practices.
- Incident Management:
- Respond to environmental incidents, such as spills or violations.
- Investigate incidents to determine causes and prevent recurrence.
- Coordinate with emergency response teams and regulatory agencies as needed.
- Sustainability Initiatives:
- Promote and support initiatives to reduce the environmental footprint of the organization.
- Work on projects related to energy efficiency, waste reduction, and resource conservation.
- Collaborate with other departments to integrate sustainability into business practices.
- ISO14001 Compliance:
- Participate in internal and external audits.
- Correct any CARS/PARS that may be identified.
- Reporting and Communication:
- Prepare and submit required environmental reports to regulatory bodies.
- Communicate environmental policies and achievements to stakeholders.
- Serve as a liaison with environmental agencies and community groups.
- Work with HSE Manager in safety related items.
Essential Skills and Qualifications:
- Educational Background:
- Bachelor's degree in Environmental Science, Environmental Engineering, or a related field.
- Advanced degrees or certifications (e.g., Certified Environmental Professional) are advantageous.
- Regulatory Knowledge:
- In-depth understanding of environmental laws and regulations, such as the Clean Air Act, Clean Water Act, and Resource Conservation and Recovery Act (RCRA).
- Certified in international environmental standards (e.g., ISO 14001) is beneficial.
- Analytical and Problem-Solving Skills:
- Ability to analyze complex environmental data and regulations.
- Strong problem-solving skills to address compliance issues and environmental challenges.
- Communication Skills:
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
- Ability to effectively communicate complex environmental concepts to non-experts.
