Job Description
We are seeking an Associate Engineer to join our R&D team. The position requires an
Associate’s Degree in Engineering Technology or Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical, Chemical, or Materials Engineering, or a related discipline, and several years experience with the assembly and testing of small-scale combustion or fuel cell prototype devices. You will be supporting the activities of senior mechanical and chemical engineers including construction of test fixtures, prototype assembly, validation, test execution, troubleshooting, and data collection and analysis.

Job Responsibilities

  • Collaborate with engineers to conduct product development projects involving the assembly, testing, modification, and evaluation of electro-mechanical and electrochemical product prototypes
  • Assemble and operate lab systems designed to prepare and evaluate the properties of catalytic and membrane materials
  • Conduct mechanical, electrical, and pneumatic assembly of prototype products using common machine shop and hand tools, including wiring, soldering, crimping, and fastening
  • Ensure lab products meet quality standards in accordance with procedures, engineering specifications, drawings, wiring diagrams, and schematics
  • Test, evaluate, troubleshoot, and diagnose electronic and electromechanical issues at the system and component level
  • Prepare test plans and acceptance criteria to study and verify system capabilities
  • Collect and analyze data to prove design performance
  • Identify areas for design improvement
  • Communicate technical developments to program manager in short written memorandums
  • Maintain product and company reputation through high quality, craftsman-like work
  • Maintain engineering lab area in a clean and orderly fashion
  • Occasional domestic travel required (< 5%)

Educational Qualifications and Previous Work Experience
Minimum of Associates Degree in Engineering Technology, or related discipline, and 5 years experience in mechanical or chemical systems design, fabrication, and testing. Bachelor’s
Degree in Mechanical, Chemical, or Materials Engineering desirable.

Required Skills and Abilities

  • Ability to read, interpret, create, and assemble from drawings, wiring diagrams, schematics, and sketches
  • Experience with setup, operation and testing of high temperature combustion or catalytic test systems
  • Experience with assembly of tubing and piping runs
  • Strong electro-mechanical troubleshooting skills
  • Demonstrated ability to work effectively with vendors, machine shops, and partners
  • Ability to handle multiple and changing priorities in a fast-paced R&D environment
  • Good documentation, writing and reporting ability
  • Proficient with MS Office (Excel, Word)

Desirable Skills and Abilities

  • Experience with catalyst formulation and coating procedures
  • Experience with analytical equipment operation such as gas chromatography, calorimetry, mechanical testing, and thermogravimetry
  • Familiarity with heat transfer and fluid dynamics concepts
  • Familiarity with embedded system controls
