SUMMARY

The Exploratorium creates tools and experiences that help people to become active explorers; our museum floor features a collection of 700+ interactive exhibits, we create groundbreaking professional development programs for educators, and we produce exhibits and programs for partner institutions around the world. At the core of that work is the Exploratorium Central Community – our group of designers, engineers, fabricators, scientists, artists, researchers, and administrative staff that help realize these projects. The Systems Engineer is a critical part of this team – supporting Central Community staff by keeping our information systems running smoothly. This position reports to and works closely with the Exhibits Production Manager, also collaborating with institutional leadership, Exploratorium IT department, engineers, graphic designers, outside contractors, and others. The Exploratorium is transitioning from traditional server-based tools, such as Filemaker, to a software-as-a-service model, and this role will be at the center of that effort for the Central Community group.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

Refine, develop, maintain, and serve as institutional resource for information systems & tools related to the development and production of exhibits and other work product: bills of materials, inventory, shop certification, procedure and best practice documentation, purchasing / accounting, engineering document control, software installers, etc.
Effectively document work in progress and final output.
Develop training materials and administer trainings for colleagues on information systems and related.
As a member of the Production Management team, participate as needed in the administration and day-to-day operations of the exhibit shop: procurement, inventory management, estimating, space management, packaging, logistics, etc.
Maintain positive, professional, and effective lines of communication between staff, management, other departments and outside contacts.
Ability to move from place to place and utilize a computer terminal and general office equipment.
Other duties as assigned.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

BS/BA from an accredited college/university or equivalent combination of education and experience in applicable subject (computer science, software, business, engineering, manufacturing, industrial design, etc.)
Three years' professional experience in one or more of the following fields: software engineering, information technology, database management, data analysis, manufacturing systems management, construction management, compliance, integrated logistics support, or similar
RDBMS (Relational database management systems) proficiency required; Filemaker Pro Advanced experience preferred
Excellent communication skills, especially ability to effectively document work and teach others
Proficiency with Microsoft Office or Google's G-suite, specifically Excel and Google Sheets required
Proficiency with ERP (enterprise resource planning), BOM (bills of materials) management, PLM (product lifecycle management), and document control systems preferred
Proficiency in the following a plus: Salesforce, Rootstock, Netsuite (or similar), CAD / CAM tools (Autodesk , Sketchup, etc.), Smartsheet, Basecamp 2, SQL
Talent for collaboration and effective teamwork, and demonstrated ability to work with people at all levels of an organization
Ability to work on multiple projects and problems simultaneously with minimal supervision.
Excellent sense of value and efficiency as expressed in effectiveness of solutions and personal time management
Professionalism, promptness, initiative, organization, and reliability
Interest in science and teaching is a plus
