The senior designer serves as the primary designer on the Office of Communications & Public Affairs brand team supporting the strategic needs of the university’s administration. As the senior designer, you will work independently and with a dynamic team of creative professionals to enhance the University of South Carolina’s national brand. You will have a lead role within the Office of Communications & Public Affairs to create original concepts and designs that meet the objectives of internal partners and appeal to external audiences while ensuring quality, consistency and excellence within the university brand platform.
You will balance creative leadership, design expertise, project management skills and production knowledge to deliver compelling, creative solutions for digital and print communications. In addition to the requisite skills of a senior design professional, you should possess a passion for a collaborative approach to engaging design, an appreciation for lifelong learning and professional development, an appetite to mentor younger designers, a creative curiosity and a desire to help grow the national brand reputation of the University of South Carolina.
Minimum Qualifications (Classified and Unclassified positions)
Bachelor’s degree in graphic arts or art and 4 years work experience in graphic arts for print media publications and a razor sharp portfolio.
A bachelor’s degree in graphic design, communications, marketing, advertising; Five or more years experience in graphic design with both print and digital design experience; Art direction experience; Supervisory experience
- Detailed working knowledge of software for digital design and development, print design and publishing and the accurate preparation of files for vendors
- Expert level skill with core Adobe Creative Cloud design applications
- Working knowledge of Microsoft Office applications
- Basic editorial skills
- Well-developed understanding of established and emerging design aesthetics, print and digital design principles, typography, color theory, illustration, photography and techniques for effective design.
- Well-developed understanding of design that drives audience engagement and action
- Excellent communications and creative thinking skills, with an ability to effectively present to clients and communicate underlying strategies.
- Strong organizational skills and ability to manage multiple concurrent projects
- Familiarity with usage rights, licensing and copyright laws
- Ability to work as a team player, demonstrate personal initiative and inspire colleagues
- Ability to operate in a fast-paced environment with changing priorities
