The Office of the Vice President for Research and Innovation (OVPRI) and University Advancement at Virginia Tech are seeking an Executive Director of LINK to join our LINK | LICENSE | LAUNCH team. This position will provide leadership to LINK, a dynamic team responsible for advancing industry partnerships that deliver value to our partners, while supporting scholarship, faculty, corporate giving, sponsored research and more. LINK was founded a little over two years ago and since this time, we have made significant strides, including in shaping the broader “discovery to market” model that includes all corporate facing activities under one team. This leadership position is key to the ambitious plans Virginia Tech is making to be a leading 21st century land grant university that delivers innovative solutions to the most pressing global challenges of our time.
The Executive Director of LINK will lead a team of business development professionals who are responsible for growing industry partnerships. Under his/her leadership, the team will act as a gateway to the university, making connections between external partners and faculty. Through a matrix model with staff connected to colleges and spanning across the state, including northern Virginia and Roanoke, the Executive Director will provide leadership to a team that is supporting university-level priorities including Virginia Tech’s Innovation Campus and expansion in Roanoke, as well as managing a defined portfolio of strategic relationships.
This person, in addition to managing the team, will carry a portfolio of companies. The Executive Director will nurture and expand relationships through research-based partnerships, connections to research centers, institutes and programs, faculty expertise, facilities and equipment, facilitated working sessions and co-creation activities, fundraising, facilitation of student hiring and internships, professional training, advisory board opportunities, networking events and other university activities and programs in response to industry partner needs and interests.
Reporting to the Associate Vice President of Innovation and Partnerships this person will:
Lead a team focused on nurturing and expanding relationships with prospective industry partners by serving as a gateway to the university and by offering many points of engagement and value.
Working with the AVP of Innovation and Partnership’ and LINK team, help set priorities, large and small; including shaping and supporting big ideas and university priorities, as well as managing individual relationships with company contacts, faculty, and university administration.
Ensure creation, adoption, and daily use of best-in-class processes and tools, including CRM system, data analysis, measurement, reporting, and tracking of opportunities; generate and share reports to assist in tracking and monitoring progress; guide adjustments as necessary to ensure team goals are met.
Nurture a team to develop and apply specialized and highly sophisticated skills necessary to work with corporate executives, external stakeholders, and internal constituents; lead visioning, strategic planning, communications, opportunity shaping and other strategic activities that support cultivation of partnerships.
Make direct and important contributions to Center goals by managing a portfolio of corporations, driving investment and partnership that support Advancement and Office of Research and Innovation goals.
Develop intelligence around and connections to University faculty and research interests, capabilities, and activities connections, identify opportunities that have industry/market relevance; organize working sessions, and effectively connect and shepherd the relationships.
Identify, shape, and solicit corporate opportunities (including philanthropic), through a variety of mechanisms, including organizing working sessions and co-creation activities with members of the faculty and staff.
Schedule and host corporate visits to campus that reflects the breadth of VT offerings, driving toward tangible opportunities and outcomes.
Maintain knowledge of technology, research, and recruiting needs of industry, as well as of specific firms.
Assist in crafting grant applications, proposals, white papers, status reports and corporate report cards.
Assist in formulating collaboration strategies and opportunities, as well as research contract and gift agreement review and processing.
Assist in developing marketing initiatives and stewardship programs with corporate partners.
Serve as liaison to certain University colleges, units, and institutes.
Master’s or other advanced degree and demonstrated professional experience in consultative or technical sales/marketing, university corporate development/business development, client management, business/research strategy, and/or innovation/partnerships function.
Track record of professionalism, with strong communication skills and ability to work with and support a wide range of constituents, e.g., clients, customers, teams, donors, and volunteers.
Demonstrated experience analyzing data (e.g., market, technical, and customer) and lend technical expertise to establish priorities, and develop and implement strategies with increasing complexity.
Evidence as a self-starter who can work independently, as well as be a team contributor in a complex and fast-paced organization.
Willingness to travel on a frequent basis.
Technical or industry background, primarily in engineering or sciences.
Experience managing a team and/or other demonstrations of leadership.
Evidence of business/revenue growth and/or partnership development in a technical sales/marketing capacity.
Evidence of productive relationships and facilitation with administrators, key business leaders, faculty, staff, institutional boards, volunteers, and/or donors.
Previous business development/strategy experience developing progressively complex strategies and using data analytics, technical/domain knowledge and information, and competitive/market intelligence to guide decision making.
