POSITION SUMMARY: Performs a full range of laboratory procedures associated with the preparation of specimens for the anatomical study of their microscopic structure. Provides care to Dermatology/Mohspatients with complex diagnoses. As the participant in care, treats all internal and external physicians, nursing staff, and patients/families as valued customers striving to provide advocacy and service. Assists the medical staff to achieve the goals of the program and to ensure the plan of care is carried out. The histotechnicianis a resource person for other personnel in the laboratory area and is responsible for teaching and oversight of other laboratory personnel in the MBR Cancer Center Clinic.

EDUCATION, CERTIFICATION, AND/OR LICENSURE:
1. Associate degree in Histotechnology
2. Certified by the American Society of Clinical Pathologist (ASCP) asa Histotechnologist(HT or HTL)
Three years histology experience

Performs in a timely manner, the basic and complicated procedures (e.g., specimen accessioning and processing, inventory, ordering, special stains for cellular structures, immunohistochemistry and DNA testing) designed to meet the needs of the department in support of the hospital's mission and goals.
Follow Standard Operating Procedures (SOP) to produce accurate reproducible results.
Operates basic and advanced laboratory equipment/instruments (e.g. cryostats, pH meters) consistent with manufacturer's instruction manual and SOP.
Prepares and stocks as required reagents and solutions to complete procedures requested according to SOP. Restocks as required, the work area to assist co-workers in the performance of their duties.
Differentiates all medical and technical problems, as required, with referral to RN, manager, or medical/ nursing directors.
Participates, as required, in the training and evaluation of medical students, residents and other medical staff, as established by hospital and cancer center policies.
Perform on a daily basis routine cleaning of work area (i.e., wash glassware).
Must demonstrate, after receiving instruction and training, knowledge of the patient care requirements for all age groups as required by standard operating procedures.
Teaches and serves as a resource to staff.
Accepts patient specimens and assures the proper collection and labeling according to SOP.
Accessions and assigns specimen numbers for each specimen received.
Assists the resident or attending physician while grossing.
Assists physician or RN with frozen sections as requested (e.g., cutting, staining, cover slipping and labeling), according to SOP.
Assists physician with surgical procedures including suture removal and wound dressing.
Performs required quality assurance and control procedures according to SOP, to assure the reliability of reagents and laboratory equipment/instruments for accurate and reproducible results to insure quality patient care.
Performs any required maintenance, calibration and quality control of laboratory equipment/instruments within the predetermined time schedule, according to SOP
Recognizes errors, problems and utilizes expertise to minor and major troubleshooting and appropriate problem resolution in a timely manner.
Completes quality control records legibly and accurately 100% of the time (e.g., review of records, daily worksheets), according to SOP.
Documents all work appropriately, (e.g., special stains, slides, immunoperoxidaseslides, frozen section slides, re-cut slides, and surgical slides, conference, teaching and research), according to SOP.
Ensures proper autoclaving of all equipment and ensure maintenance of sterile and non-sterile equipment.
Assists the Dermatologist and Director in quality improvement activities.
Collects data for quality improvement activities and assists in developing, analyzing, interpreting, and identifying action plans.
Actively involved in the organization’s cost reduction goals by identifying and facilitating care in a cost effective manner.
Answers the telephone in a prompt and courteous manner identifying self and unit.
Keeps current in all department communications (e.g., reading circulated material, minutes and procedures) incorporating new information into routine use.
Maintains accurate and legible communication/documentation logs.
Effectively communicates in a timely manner any unusual supply usage or critical supply levels to the manager to expedite ordering of required supplies for the continual service of patients.

Ability to move and lift as required, equipment, and supplies up to 40 lbs.
Moderate work involves physical effort such as lifting materials, and equipment of eleven to twenty pounds, prolonged use of small hand tools (drills, hammers, paint brushes, etc.) stooping, pushing equipment, beds, carts, etc.
Capable of prolonged periods of standing and sitting.
