The Thermo Fisher Scientific Research Services Group in Santa Clara is looking for a highly motivated, creative thinker who can be part of a team focused on high throughput genotyping, DNA copy number, next generation genotyping and nucleic acid extractions. This job requires a dedicated individual, who is a quick learner and enjoys challenges.
How will you make an impact?
The Research Services Labs provides customers with service offerings for microarray platforms such as Axiom, Oncoscan and Gene Expression and other Next Gen Genotyping platforms using sequencing technologies. We provide customers with an opportunity to test our platforms and prove their efficacy. We have both internal and external customers from industry and academia worldwide studying a large variety of subjects and organisms.
What will you do?
We have multiple lab environments in our sub-unit and every candidate hired is thoughtfully assigned to any of four environments outlined below based on previous work experience – This position is currently dedicated to the Expression and Oncoscan lab workflows.
Train in low throughput genotyping assays such as Oncoscan, Gene expression and Ampliseq; this requires use of multi-channel pipettes, reagent preparation and sample tracking.
Training in high throughput genotyping such as Axiom or Eureka Genomics; this requires the use of automated liquid handlers and timed schedules.
Provide assistance in the pre-PCR lab environment performing quantitation and normalization of nucleic acids utilizing automation.
Train in a BSL2 space for nucleic acid extractions for each of the aforementioned platforms.
Other primary duties and responsibilities will include:
Be a role model and leader in the specific lab this individual is present
Provide guidance and troubleshooting for customer projects as needed.
Provide mentorship and cross training to other scientists.
Perform laboratory experiments to generate reproducible/reliable data.
Perform testing of components and process modifications of biochemical assay products and designs.
Maintain and present accurate records, concisely summarize and report data.
Conduct computer-based data analysis.
Data entry into laboratory information management system (LIMS).
Be responsible for calibration and preventative maintenance of assigned equipment. Documentation of these activities.
Support implementation of new service offerings, such as additional Thermo Fisher platforms and/or other technologies.
Develop SOPs and other relevant documentation to support consistent and smooth laboratory operations.
Assist with the transfer of new assays and/or processes into lab services.
Foster collaboration and a team environment
Identify methods, process and operation improvement opportunities
Participate in process and operation improvement opportunities
Respond to internal and external inquiries
Comply with company quality management systems, policies and procedures
Additional duties/responsibilities according to business needs
How will you get here?
BS in biological sciences fields, such as Biology or Biochemistry with 3-5 years of laboratory experience
MS in biological sciences fields, with 2-3 years of laboratory experience
Proficient in laboratory techniques required such as micro pipetting, solution preparation, PCR, gel electrophoresis, optical density measurements, work with Laboratory Information Management System (LIMS), etc.
Knowledgeable in Good Laboratory Practices (GLP), Good Documentation Practices (GDP) and basic understanding of chemical and biologics handling.
Experience with setting up new laboratories and learning new technologies
Knowledge, Skills, Abilities:
Individual must work well in a team environment
Excellent at record keeping and highly organized; neat and tidy and cognizant of shared lab space
Capacity to learn new technologies/concepts rapidly and apply them to the needs of the lab
Ability to perform basic failure analysis and investigations
Willingness to work weekends and possibly overlap with an evening shift when needed
