Assistant Contract Professor position in Medical Oncology, 100% time, annually renewable, non-tenure track appointment.
This position joins the Animal Cancer Care and Research Program, which is an intercollegiate program managed jointly by the College of Veterinary Medicine and the Masonic Cancer Center that includes more than 60 faculty from the six units of the Academic Health Center, the College of Biological Sciences, and the College of Science and Engineering. The successful candidate will have the opportunity to build upon the rich foundation of our comparative oncology program and advance its clinical, research and teaching components.

Anticipated workload distribution for the position will be:
Research: 85% effort.
Expectations for the position include establishing an outstanding, externally-funded research program. Previous success obtaining extramural funding must be documented and there is an expectation to maintain continued extramural funding in support of independent or collaborative research projects. Evidence of continued research publications in high impact journals also must be demonstrated. It is expected that the successful candidate will develop an independent world-class research program that synergizes with current areas of expertise within the Comparative Oncology program. These include investigating diseases of high comparative relevance, including but not limited to sarcomas, hematopoietic tumors, and autoimmune diseases that affect companion animals and humans alike. Mastery of contemporary bioinformatics tools and experience using artificial intelligence to develop novel diagnostics is highly desirable.
Establishment and continuation of an independent, extramurally-funded research program and participation in the teaching and service missions of the Department and College are expectations of the position. The successful candidate will contribute to the College of Veterinary Medicine’s research signature programs in comparative medicine, zoonotic infectious diseases, and population medicine, and will foster opportunities for cross-disciplinary collaborations within the Academic Health Center (www.ahc.umn.edu).
Teaching: 15% effort.
This is based on a 3-hour credit course (undergraduate), with approximately 8 hours of work per hour taught (new lecture preparation and updating, office hours, grading), which will be listed in the catalog under VCS in Spring of 2019. The secondary responsibilities of this position will be in teaching and advising. Specifically, provision of high quality instruction and mentorship for undergraduate students, veterinary students, graduate students and residents in the lab, as well as instruction in existing and future professional, graduate, and/or undergraduate courses is expected. Development of a new online or blended course for graduate students is strongly encouraged.

About the Department

The Department has a rich tradition in Comparative Medicine. Core strengths in Comparative Medicine include oncology and cancer biology, inflammatory and chronic diseases, and animal models of genetic and metabolic disease (neurobiology, musculoskeletal disease, endocrine, nutrition, and urology). The Comparative Medicine program emphasizes interdisciplinary and collaborative research with investigators across all three academic departments in the College and the College's centers; the Masonic Cancer Center; the Center for Immunology; the Stem Cell Institute; and other units in the Academic Health Center; the College of Biological Sciences, the College of Food, Agricultural and Natural Resource Sciences, and the College of Science and Engineering. Comparative Medicine is a core program in the University’s NIH Clinical and Translational Science Institute (CTSI). The oncology section has a vigorous basic and translational research program with several active clinical trials and a Clinical Investigation Center infrastructure that provides technical support and assistance with clinical research opportunities.
