Job Function

Mechanical Design

Subfunction: Plant Design

Performs engineering work in planning, operations, construction or maintenance environments. Plans, designs and estimates time and cost and oversees construction and maintenance of structures, facilities, systems and components. Develops and applies engineering principles, standards and procedures. Applies principles, standards and procedures to create cost-effective design. Provides engineering support and consultation and ensures adherence to industry standards, codes and regulations.

Designs, develops, modifies and evaluates the design and implementation of cost-effective and mechanically and structurally sound products and solutions to support reliable and safety-compliant power plant equipment and systems.

Develops specifications, directs and coordinates fabrication, installation, operation, application, maintenance and repair of mechanical or electromechanical machines, equipment, instrumentation, tools, engines and systems. Ensures that quality levels and industry standards are maintained or improved. Oversees installation, operation, maintenance and repair of equipment.

Key Responsibilities

Engineering Standards

Maintains currency in state-of-the-art engineering practices and independently applies professional knowledge of engineering processes and standards to assignments/projects.

Applies applicable codes (i.e., ASME B31.1 Power Piping, ASME Boiler Pressure Vessel Code, American National Standards Institute, Oregon Boiler Law, National Board Inspection Code, American Society for Testing and Materials, American Water Works Association, American Petroleum Institute, etc.) to all relevant engineering assignments.

Engineering Production

Prepares a variety of moderately complex engineering deliverables; leads smaller production teams.

Maintains and improves the operation, reliability, safety and regulatory compliance of PGE’s generating resources in the assigned functional area; conducts stress analysis, fluid/thermal calculations, performance testing and monitoring, upgrades to water, air, chemical, fuel gas and oil systems, etc. Performs modifications or upgrades to fish facilities.

Analyzes, responds to and performs moderately complex technical studies; support RCAs; prepares reports and design packages and provides data and recommendations on moderately complex technical matters to company personnel and management.

Investigates and analyzes moderately complex system construction, maintenance and operational problems. Develops solutions and initiates corrective actions.

Provides design direction to technicians, draftsmen and designers within functional area.

Project Coordination

Assigns tasks and coordinates with other internal/external team members on assigned projects; shares information and provides professional guidance in executing project tasks.

Recommends design improvements.

Makes suggestions on design methodologies to apply; interprets and applies approach to design challenges; coordinates work with other engineering departments, plant staff, environmental services, nondestructive examination team and reliability-centered maintenance team.

Scopes, plans, schedules and directs several minor project assignments with semi-complex features associated with design, construction, operation, maintenance or testing. Prepares project budget estimates and tracks project costs.

Knowledge Sharing

Shares current knowledge of latest technology and processes; may assist with mentoring, recognition and any corrective actions required.

Applies engineering concepts and theories in extending engineering proficiency within a field of specialization.

Education/Experience/Certifications

Education

Requires a bachelor’s degree in engineering from ABET-accredited engineering program or program accredited by an equivalent agency.

Experience

Typically, two or more years in engineering.

Certifications, Licenses and Training

Fundamentals of Engineering (FE) exam strongly preferred; may be required based upon role.

Utilizes thorough understanding and interpretation of applicable codes (i.e., ASME B31.1 Power Piping, ASME Boiler Pressure Vessel Code, American National Standards Institute, Oregon Boiler Law, National Board Inspection Code, American Society for Testing and Materials, American Water Works Association, American Petroleum Institute, etc.) and serves as a resource, providing guidance to other engineers.

Engineering Production

Prepares a variety of complex engineering deliverables for larger or multiple projects; coordinates multiple-discipline activity.

Analyzes and recommends overall design enhancements to the operation, reliability, safety and regulatory compliance of PGE’s generating resources; reviews calculations completed by other engineers; project work may include power boiler modifications, gas turbine overhauls and upgrades, steam/wind turbine major maintenance, hydro turbine upgrades and maintenance, vibration analysis, bearing alignment, specification development and review, etc.

Analyzes, responds to, performs and reviews complex technical studies; supports RCAs; prepares reports and design packages and provides data and recommendations on complex technical matters to company personnel and management.

Investigates and analyzes complex system construction, maintenance and operational problems. Develops solutions and initiates corrective actions.

Provides design direction to other engineers, technicians, draftsmen and designers within functional area.

Project Coordination

Actively coordinates with other internal/external team members on moderately complex projects, including representing the team to interdepartmental stakeholders.

Reviews lower-level engineering work.

Selects design methodologies and solutions to apply; leads work with other engineering departments, plant staff, environmental services, nondestructive examination team and reliability-centered maintenance team.

Scopes, plans, schedules and directs major project assignments or a number of minor project assignments with complex features associated with design, construction, operation, maintenance or testing. Prepares project budget estimates and tracks project costs.

Knowledge Sharing

Serves as a technical specialist and provides consultation/guidance to project teams in a particular practice area; actively fosters knowledge management and provides mentoring; implements resource-management strategy.

Maintains a high level of engineering proficiency within a field of specialization.

Education/Experience/Certifications

Education

Requires a bachelor’s degree in engineering from ABET-accredited engineering program or program accredited by an equivalent agency.

Experience

Typically, eight or more years in engineering or five or more years in a related field with PE license.

Certifications, Licenses and Training

Professional Engineering (PE) license strongly preferred; may be required based upon role.
