Job Description:
Wittenberg University is accepting applications for a full-time Police Sergeant position. The Sergeant's responsibilities include supervising second or third shift as assigned; carrying out campus investigations; assisting in prevention efforts and established programs; coordinating special events; assisting in field training of officers; leading, directing, scheduling, reviewing and editing reports; and supervising all subordinates employed by the Wittenberg University Police Division. The Sergeant may assume administrative and command responsibilities in the absence of the Chief or Lieutenant.
Essential functions include, but are not limited to:
Supervise assigned shift and monitor services provided by the university Police Division including assigning officers to patrol area, relaying an explaining special orders and information, checking officer performance and appearance in the field, training officers, and inspecting equipment.
Assist in the investigation of campus crimes and crimes within our jurisdiction.
In accordance with departmental policy and the canons of police ethics, respond to calls, assist motorists, issue citations, assist with medical needs, accidents, traffic enforcement, investigate and/or arrest in criminal matters, and patrol in a proactive manner. Utilize appropriate and lawful means to prevent or halt the commission of an offense and to prevent escape of or to apprehend a suspect or offender.
Provide mutual aid when necessary and under the agreements set forth by the Springfield Police Division and Clark County Sheriff's Office.
Engage in a proactive approach to law enforcement, campus security and safety, assist in prevention programs, aid in the mentoring, training, and supervision or officers and support staff employed by the Wittenberg Police Division.
Faithfully discharge the duties as sworn police officer, enforcing all laws and take such action in all matters that may fall legally within our jurisdiction.
Coordinate Wittenberg University Police activities with other law enforcement agencies and governmental agencies to provide appropriate services and crowd control for campus special events, events within our jurisdiction, including basketball and football games, concerts, speakers, and other social activities.
Assist in interviewing, selecting, disciplining and evaluating the performance of staff.
Conduct research and provide reports as requested.
Perform other relevant duties as assigned such as special projects, programs, developmental activities, etc.
Requirements:
Requirements include:
High School Diploma/GED
Current OPOTA certification and capability of maintaining a valid certificate
At least 5 years of experience working in law enforcement
Applicants must be 21 years of age or older
Applicants must possess a valid Ohio Driver's License without restricted driving privileges
Applicants must be able to pass the following tests/screenings: drug screen, psychological fitness, and background records check
Applicants must be able to work 1st, 2nd, and 3rd shifts
Experience in criminal investigation, traffic investigation/enforcement, public relations, field training, and capability of obtaining certification in mid-level management courses
Working knowledge and experience using Microsoft Office software, specifically proficient in the use of Microsoft Office products (Outlook, Word, Excel).
