Our orgainzation's Animal Health, Millsboro, DE is a Biotechnology Center of Excellence that performs vaccine production operations from antigen production through formulation, filling and packaging. With expertise in mammalian, insect and avian cell culture production (anchorage & non-anchorage dependent), live bird vaccine production, embryonated egg vaccine production, roller bottle vaccine production, bioreactor vaccine production and down-stream processing (water in oil emulsions, aseptic filling, lyophilization, etc.), the Millsboro site supplies and supports products for a wide range of species including poultry, equine, swine, bovine and companion animal.
The Associate Director, Engineering provides support and expertise to manufacturing, Quality and distribution in support of the veterinary biologics. He collaborates with Regulatory Affairs, Quality, EHS (Safety), R & D, GES (Global Engineering), BTS (Bio-Technical Support) and ATS (Analytical Technical Support) to ensure site systems, processes and projects meet or exceed regulatory and company standards. Collaborates with site leadership on engineering standards and/ or solutions that lead to stable and effective systems. Directs the on-site engineering team, maintenance team and supporting contractors to ensure solutions and/or projects are delivered on-time and on budget. Manages team members to include coaching on MPS (Lean Manufacturing) principles, inclusive behaviors and best practices.
Major Activities and Responsibilities:
Supports and maintains a site master plan to ensure strategic improvement decisions are considered and proactive improvements are planned and initiated in a timely fashion.
Provides best practices to various site groups ensure equipment performance and reliability.
Oversees Engineering COE (Center of Excellence) action plans and routinely evaluates status and makes adjustments as needed.
Oversees site capital budget and assures timely and compliant execution of capital projects according to the business needs.
Collaborates with others to determine URS (User Specification Requirements) meet or exceed the critical control parameters required for new and/or existing manufacturing processes.
Understands customer (Internal & External) needs to effectively tailor engineering solutions to required service level.
Ensures engineering processes and controls meet quality and regulatory requirements.
Ensure top talent and potential successors are appropriately challenged and developed.
Coach Engineering and Maintenance teams on best practices, MPS principles and Merck leadership behaviors.
Education Minimum Requirement:
Bachelor’s degree in related area (Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Bi-Process Engineer); Advanced degree preferred
Required Experience and Skills**:
Eight (8) + years’ industry experience as an engineer in a Pharmaceutical and/or Biologic Production setting.
Five (5) + year’s management experience (people/budget/organization/results).
Proven ability to use scientific problem solving and lean manufacturing principles (Examples Include: Hoshin, 5S, Fishbone, Kata) to solve complex issues.
Working knowledge of regulatory requirements in accordance with cGMP and/or USDA manufacturing operations.
Proven project management skills.
Proven people development and coaching skills.
Excellent communication skills; able to communicate company and site strategies to direct reports and site employees.
Working knowledge of industrial utilities such as HVAC, HEPA’s, electrical, Plant Steam, Clean Steam, Water for Injection, Deionized Water.
Working knowledge of bioprocessing equipment such as Lyophilizers, Bioreactors, Fermenters, Centrifuges, UF Skids, Process tanks, CIP, Laboratory washers.
Working knowledge of high speed filling & secondary packaging equipment.
Working knowledge and experience in QMS (Change Control, qualification, etc….)
Proficiency in computer systems and applications including but not limited to: AutoCad, Microsoft Project, Microsoft Office (Word, Excel and Outlook), Procurement, CMMS.
Must be able to lead in a team-based empowered culture.
Ability to work independently and effectively with peers; display strong interpersonal and organizational skills.
