Nurse positions are assigned responsibilities relating to providing professional nursing services, coordinating health care services, and meeting the needs of all Oklahoma County Juvenile Detention Center (OCJDC) residents.

Nurses work under the direct supervision of the Facility Physician and the general supervision of the Charge Nurse.
:
Nurses provide direction, supervision, and coordination of all Detention Center staff involved in providing medical services to residents.
:
Nurses must possess the ability to professionally communicate medical instructions to Detention Center staff involved in providing medical services to residents.
Nurses must assist in obtaining and maintaining individual health and medical records, including information from parents and/or guardians and health care personnel outside the facility.
Nurses must perform pre-employment physicals as required for all prospective OCJB employees, to include but not limited to vaccinations and Tuberculosis tests.
Nurses must be willing to conduct training to Detention Staff and residents in areas related to personal hygiene and health.
Nurses must be able to administer first aid and other medical care within the limitations of his/her qualifications.
Nurses must have a good understanding of the health care needs of adolescents within the detention center and the components that are involved in a total adolescent’s health care system (hospitals, physicians, pharmacy’s, etc.), as well as working with related agencies in the interest of the child’s medical well-being.
Nurses must maintain a consistent schedule to meet the needs of the facility.
Nurses must maintain responsibility for any OCJDC issued equipment.
Nurses must attend to, facilitate, report, and document, resident medical, physical and emotional needs and/or problems in the assigned areas of responsibility.
All other duties as assigned as an essential employee.

Education and Experience:
Applicants must possess current RN or LPN license. One (1) year experience preferred.
Special Requirements:
Nurses must have a telephone number where they can be reached at all times.
Nurses must be willing to attend any required additional training.
Nurses must ensure a copy of current Oklahoma RN or NURSE license is on file at all times.
Necessary Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
Nurses must have a good understanding of the health care needs of adolescents to include but not limited to child development, sexually transmitted diseases, suicidal risk criteria, immunizations, etc.
Nurses must have a good understanding of the various components involved in a total health care system.
Nurses must be able to relate to residents with medical problems in a professional, positive and nurturing manner.
Nurses must have good organizational and time management skills.
Nurses must possess maturity and judgment consistent with the high level of responsibility required.
Nurses must communicate effectively, orally and in writing.
Nurses must be able to work independently and in a team environment.
Nurses must be able to work in stressful situations.

Computer, telephone, television, DVD, hand-held radio, medical supplies and equipment, copy/fax machine.

Must be able to push/pull with at least twenty (20) pounds of force to operate the secure doors within the facility.
Must be able to occasionally lift/carry up to twenty-five (25) pounds.
Must be able to kneel/bend/crouch as necessary for filing/administrative purposes.
Must have the ability to read, write, and comprehend to accomplish various administrative reports, filing, and number recognition related tasks.
Must have the ability to listen and communicate in such a way that effective communication with coworkers can be accomplished.
Must have clarity of vision and object manipulation to operate various computer/technological equipment including telephone, keyboard, mouse, computer, calculator, copy machine, etc.
This position is primarily sedentary, approximately 70% sitting and 30% walking/standing.

While working in the medical clinic or the Administrative area of detention, the level is usually calm to very quiet. While working in secure detention, an employee can expect a high noise level with several functions occurring at the same time. The atmosphere will range from combative and hostile to calm and peaceful.
