Title: Assistant Director of Landscape
CHARACTERISTICS OF DUTIES OF THE CLASS:
Under direction, oversees day to day operations in landscape work. Makes regular field inspections and performs administrative tasks in accordance with the operation of the division. Performs other related duties as required.
EXAMPLES OF DUTIES:
Supervises office staff and crews involved in carrying out the Chicago Park District programs for landscaping and ecological restoration and stewardship. Oversees seeding and sodding of lawn areas; ecological restoration work; landscape and horticultural projects; grading and preparation of soils; tree and shrub pruning and trimming; planting of trees and shrubs, and special treatment of diseased trees, shrubs; lawn maintenance, rubbish collection, snow removal, trail maintenance, etc. Directs staff in community engagement and partnership development efforts. Directs crews in landscape design and rehabilitation projects, develops layouts and coordinates the work to be performed. Instructs and trains crews in new or special techniques being utilized and ensures that work is being performed in a proper manner.
Serves as a liaison with individuals involved in design, engineering, operations and maintenance. Serves as a liaison with programming units and partners. Keeps track of labor equipment costs, and makes projections on future construction work. Keeps the Director of Natural Resources abreast of general operations and new developments.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE:
Graduation from an accredited college or university is recommended. A Bachelor's Degree in Landscape Architecture, Landscape Operations, Environmental Science, Conservation or Horticulture is preferred, and if supplemented by five years of experience, including two years of landscape operations work in a supervisory capacity or work supervising the implementation of large projects with a landscape component, is fully qualifying for this position. Equivalent combinations of education and experience may be qualifying for this position.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:
Knowledge of modern landscape maintenance and ecological restoration practices and techniques; Knowledge of standard Park safety practices and government regulations covering infrastructure; Knowledge of insecticides and their proper uses; Skill in planning, organizing, scheduling and monitoring landscape maintenance and restoration work; Proven experience in developing and managing partnerships; Skill in conveying technical directions to field crews; Ability to make reasonable monetary projections.
