Smart from the Start (Smart) is family support and community engagement that has as its mission to promote the healthy development of young children, youth and families. Smart empowers families and communities with the tools, resources and support they need to break cycles of chronic school underachievement and generational poverty and to thrive.
Smart Has Its Mission To:
Provide neighborhood-based crisis intervention and family stabilization;
Encourage parents to be their children's first teachers;
Provide trauma-informed, physical and mental health programs and supports to families in under-resourced communities;
Ensure that children and youth have access to culturally relevant early childhood education and academic enrichment;
Offer concrete supports and opportunities for families to achieve economic self-sufficiency;
Encourage youth and family leadership.
Smart is offering a comprehensive, coordinated set of services for parents, caregivers and children to support school readiness, including home visiting, parenting education and support, adult education, information and referrals to vital services, fun and educational programs for parents and caregivers together, and activities to support a community-wide focus on school readiness.
A Smart from the Start “Program Coordinator” is responsible for the facilitation of Smart from the Start site-based programming, at one of the Smart from the Start program sites.
Coordinators work closely with senior staff to develop and fine tune programming, while developing and maintaining relationships with partner agencies and providing support, education and guidance to families.
Coordinators are also responsible for filing and keeping track of paperwork and documentation as required, while engaging and retaining families in programming.
Essential Job Responsibilities:
This position combines the skills and responsibilities of an early childhood specialist and a family support specialist with experience working in Atlanta communities.
The Program Coordinator will work with the Smart Team by:
Facilitating programming at Smart from the Start sites;
Participating in the ongoing development of the Smart from the Start initiative through Smart staff meetings and engagement in the local community;
Developing and managing outreach strategies in partnership with staff to increase family participation in programming and services;
Maintaining steady interest and enrollment in programming and increase resident and family participation;
Directly providing services to children and families;
Becoming thoroughly knowledgeable about vital services in the community and assisting families by providing referrals to community resources;
Developing and maintaining relationships with partner agencies;
Managing program equipment, inventory and supplies for site-specific Smart from the Start related programs;
Collecting and maintaining necessary information and documentation to support program evaluation in coordination with SMART staff and program evaluators;
Participating in site-specific and Smart meetings and trainings as necessary;
Representing Smart from the Start at various community meetings and events;
Working with residents, local providers and Smart staff to develop and provide events to engage the larger community in school readiness skill awareness and activities;
Other duties as required.
Preferred Qualifications/Requirements
Bachelor’s Degree in early childhood education and 5+ years professional work experience required.
Significant work experience with culturally diverse families living in economically disadvantaged communities; Ability to develop strong working relationships with others (individuals, families, co-workers, and community agencies); Knowledge of, and familiarity with Atlanta neighborhoods, community organizations, and schools; Superb written and oral communication skills; Ability to lead others, work independently, and work as part of a team.
This position will report to the Smart from the Start Program Manager.
