INVESTIGATIVE REPORTER. The DES MOINES REGISTER, one of the Midwest’s premiere news organizations, winner of 17 Pulitzer Prizes, is looking for an innovative investigative reporter with a talent for vivid storytelling and data analysis to produce short and long-term stories and projects that expose wrongdoing and find solutions.

We are looking for a reporter who is fearless in pursuing public records and adept at combing through reams of information to distill it into insightful and reader-friendly content. We demand a keen sense of fairness and an understanding that we write stories centered on people, not institutions. You will have the freedom to develop an area of emphasis and build unique stories around high-impact topics such as consumer fraud, race and workplace inequity, poverty, technology and societal injustice.

We are looking for candidates with an audience-centric mindset who understand how to use metrics to inform content decisions. This reporter will participate in data visualization projects and a variety of digital storytelling forms to engage audiences and reach a broader readership. Preferred candidates will have skills in photography and video production, and experience using live chats, social media, interactive graphics and other digital tools to present news in novel ways.

  • Bachelor's degree in journalism or any other subject in a liberal arts field from an accredited institution.
  • At least five years of reporting experience, including a proven track record of compelling enterprise and/or investigative work.
  • This position is based in our Des Moines newsroom, but we are willing to consider applicants who wish to work remotely in Iowa.
