Starbucks is looking for a principal engineer who understands large enterprises, domain driven design, system design, cloud computing principles, devops, security and more. The principal engineer knows how to write robust, high quality code as well as anyone, but also knows how to communicate complex solutions across the organization and to business stakeholders. We’re looking for someone who has built cloud-based software services at very large scale and can leverage that experience to influence the organization to work toward modern solutions.
The principal engineer in the Marketing Technology team has excellent soft skills, a bias for action and possesses strong ownership mentality. This person is someone who can communicate and influence across all organizational levels and, above all, can inspire a team of technologists to go beyond what they thought was possible. This person should have outstanding problem-solving skills and always look to simplify. The principal engineer will engage and facilitate the most complex decisions, especially in a technical capacity, and gathers internal and external data and trends to drive toward solutions.
Summary of Key Responsibilities
The principal engineer is a key contributor to the codebase of high scale, highly resilient services.
Drives for operational efficiency, including defining proper telemetry and setting good monitors and alerts
Lead the design, implementation, and operation of successful large-scale systems and services in the marketing technology and personalization domain
Work closely with the engineers to architect and develop the best technical design and approach
Active in implementing the key parts of the system
Work in an Agile/Scrum environment to deliver high quality software incrementally against aggressive schedules
Develop the long-term strategy for the services and translate that into an achievable roadmap/action plan, working with the leadership team
Works with the Senior Leadership Team to identify significant opportunities, map them to the Company’s strategic goals, achieve leadership alignment, and create plans against which to execute.
Defines and communicates the vision and roadmaps for Starbucks Technology and overall enterprise architecture to internal and external stakeholders.
Collaborates with cross-functional stakeholders to ensure tight alignment with Starbucks strategies and programs.
Leads the identification and negotiation of strategic technology partnerships and contributes to enterprise sourcing contracts to achieve broad business benefit and competitive advantage.
Communicates effectively with positive impact. Listens attentively, processes, and takes appropriate action.
Provides coaching, direction and leadership support to team members in order to improve technical competency across the team
Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
10+ years of professional industry experience with software development
Advanced experience working with distributed systems and architectures, including SOA, SaaS, and microservices approaches
Experience with high scale systems (> 10k req/sec)
Experience in Event-driven Architecture, Event sourcing, Asynchronous microservices
Building middleware systems, RESTful APIs and microservices on public cloud (Azure / AWS).
Using and supporting modern continuous delivery and DevOps pipelines and tools.
Strong interpersonal skills including excellent communication and the ability to collaborate and work well with others
Mentoring, coaching and leading other technical team members.
Ability to communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing
Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, with proven ability to design pragmatic solutions.
Strong proficiency in at least one OO programming language, databases, web technologies
Demonstrated success working within an Agile development environment (Scrum/Kanban/Lean/XP).
Demonstrated experience developing and delivering solutions for retail, internet or similar companies.
