Tesla is looking for a highly skilled and motivated individual to lead mechanical design and architecture studies for our Solar Roof, residential, and commercial solar systems.
Lead and direct cross-functional teams (mechanical, electrical, optical, testing, etc.) in the investigation of new design concepts for residential and commercial solar systems.
Investigate advanced manufacturing techniques that can be used in the fabrication of solar products.
Perform detailed design and modeling of mechanical systems and components including plastic, metal and sheet metal parts, connectors, insulators, wire-harnesses, fasteners, and other components.
Perform and lead detailed mechanical design analysis including thermal, structural, design for assembly, and design for test.
Generate and maintain product design requirements.
Create and lead the execution of solar system validation plans.
BS or higher degree in Mechanical Engineering or related field (MS preferred), or the equivalent in experience.
Evidence of exceptional ability.
8+ years of product design experience.
Deep understanding of the material science of components used in mechanical design (glass, metals, plastics, insulators, connectors, gaskets, etc.).
Expertise in a wide variety of component fabrication methods.
Extensive experience designing for high-volume manufacture and assembly.
Deep understanding of solar system design requirements including those for solar cells, mounting hardware, solar system installation, and applicable compliance and regulatory standards.
Proficiency using 3D mechanical design and analysis tools.
Excellent communication skills.
Ability to work in a fast-paced and challenging environment.
Understanding of design for reliability concepts.
Understanding of different roof types and their design and installation techniques.
Experience designing products with customer aesthetic requirements.
Knowledgeable in the electrical design of PV systems.
