A Research Assistant position is open to provide support to the Center for Structural Biology (CSB) Mega Lab. The role will perform administrative, research, and technical duties for the laboratory. Primary responsibility will be to support many aspects of well-functioning wetlab, including production of recombinant proteins, equipment care, supply inventory maintenance, and other essential tasks. The individual will work closely with graduate students, postdoctoral fellows, and laboratory managers in a dynamic laboratory environment. The ability to function independently, as well as part of a team, is critical. Excellent organizational and communications skills (both verbal and written) are essential, as is attention to detail.
Structural biology research laboratory consisting of three Principal Investigator research groups. Work unit is made up of faculty, research staff, postdoctoral fellows, and graduate students.
Duties and responsibilities
Assist in Research and Development
Preparation of buffers and reagents
Production of DNA vectors for protein expression
Bacterial overexpression and purification of proteins
Writing and updating laboratory protocols
Perform test experiments to evaluate quality of reagents
Assemble research data for presentation and/or reports
Maintain laboratory equipment including, but not limited to – centrifuges, incubated shakers, HPLC, circular dichroism spectropolarimeter, differential scanning calorimeter, dynamic light scattering, fluorometer, etc.
Oversee and train research and support staff on
Proper storage and maintenance of protein stocks
Participate in weekly and bimonthly meetings to discuss project progress
Other tasks as directed by supervisor
Ensure the most effective operation of the laboratory
Maintain procedures manual
Maintain chemical inventory
Open communication with Vanderbilt Environmental Health and Safety to maintain compliance
Maintain an inventory of supplies
Anticipate the laboratory needs and order supplies for on-going and future experiments
Negotiate pricing for sales and service of equipment, supplies, and contracts
Update laboratory program website using existing platforms
Ensure website contains current information
Perform administrative duties
Enter monthly billing charges into iLab
Submit repair work orders as needed
Assign monthly lab maintenance duties as needed
Organize monthly meetings with lab managers
Profile of an Ideal Candidate
Bachelor’s degree in biochemistry, biological sciences, chemistry, or related field is necessary.
Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in biochemistry, biological sciences, chemistry, or related field is preferred.
Minimum 2 years of experience in bacterial protein expression and purification is preferred.
Knowledge and experience with microbiology, bacterial protein expression and purification is necessary.
Experience in a structural biology laboratory is preferred.
Experience with organization, inventory, and record keeping is preferred.
Knowledge of working with and maintaining laboratory equipment is necessary.
Experience in purification of proteins by benchtop and automated chromatographic methods is preferred.
