Position serves as the Executive Consultant to and proxy for the President and CEO, Sutter Bay Hospitals on the development and implementation of strategies for the Bay Area Operating Unit by establishing overarching objectives, and ensuring the necessary staffing and resources will provide leadership and facilitation in the resolution of highly strategic and sensitive issues or projects of the Bay Area Operating Unit and Sutter Health. This position acts as a "chief of staff" and reports to the President and CEO, Sutter Bay Hospitals.

Incumbent must be able to succeed in a changing environment, and not be impeded by ambiguity or competing priorities. This means the incumbent is not only able to develop and drive high-level strategic initiatives, but can be hands-on and achieve the final results expected. High judgment, negotiation skills, ability to influence, analytical talent and leadership are essential to success in this role. The position will represent the President and CEO, Sutter Bay Area Hospitals, SHBA and Sutter Health in Bay Area Operating Unit and system-wide meetings and discussions, as needed.

The incumbent will provide strategic guidance, advising and decision making on behalf of the President and CEO, Sutter Bay Hospitals, relative to strategic and resource planning, short and long-range policy development, communications and high level analyses of new program development. The incumbent acts as an advisor and thought partner by leading teams to identify, track and measure issues, project plans and associated risks for resolution and consolidation, providing expert level consulting capabilities to the functional area to realize and execute leaders' strategic agendas. In addition, incumbent routinely and proactively accompanies and can represent the President and CEO, Sutter Bay Hospitals’ position in meetings, committees and in developing integrated functional projects, communication plans and scorecards to measure effectiveness of initiatives that drive business results. On behalf of the President and CEO, oversees the functional area operations including budget and strategic planning. May be responsible to manage other executive/internal consultants and staff to proactively identify and resolve issues of strategic importance to the company that have a significant impact on the company’s return on investment and bottom line.

This position reports to the President and CEO, Sutter Bay Hospitals.

Operational Oversite in Partnership with the President and CEO:

  • Acts as an advisor or thought partner by structuring undefined issues for resolution, researching issues, summarizing information and working with relevant stakeholders to provide the leader with the information needed to make sound decisions
  • Supports the planning, management and execution of key business projects and processes associated with management of the applicable functional area, including but not limited to performance management, strategic planning, communications, and tactical initiatives
  • Provides leadership consultation and analysis regarding the Bay Area Operating Unit, cross-entity or cross-functional performance and strategic opportunities for SHBA, and Sutter Health
  • Directs the development and execution of the functional area's operating and capital budgeting process, as well as ensures the development of accurate monthly forecasts
  • Supports the development and monitoring of Operating Unit A3s that the executive is responsible for as either a pacesetter, sponsor or team member. Prepares formal presentations, dashboards and business plans for the President and CEO
Project Management:
  • Facilitates committees and task forces of diverse membership and coordinates internal resources and third parties/vendors for the flawless execution of projects
  • Ensures that all projects are delivered on-time, within scope and within budget and will manage changes to the project scope, project schedule, and project costs using appropriate verification techniques. Develops policies and procedures to support the achievement of project objectives and evaluates the outcomes of the project as established during the planning phase
Communication and Relationship Building:
  • Acts as a communication liaison between operations, staff, Bay Area Operating Unit, and Sutter Health by providing appropriate and effective advice on behalf of the President and CEO
  • Assists and advises senior leadership and key partners to ensure their recommendations and reports to senior executives are coordinated across the organization and thoroughly crafted. In addition, incumbent will identify and recommend sound approaches to issues that are effective and results in a positive resolution. Builds collaborative relationships with the Bay Area Operating Unit, affiliate management team, system leaders, physician leaders, and project resources including consultants, contractors and other vendors to ensure frequent and consistent communication for all assigned projects
Department Coordination:
  • Enables department leadership to work most effectively with internal and external stakeholders and fulfill their commitments
  • Works with administrative support to ensure a high level of coordination for each delegated project
Team Oversight:
  • Develops and motivates assigned project team to actively support and participate in project objectives and focus.
  • Acts as a consultant/mentor to project teams. Utilizes creative, participative methods and forums that will build "team" efforts of project managers, SHBA, and staff at all levels throughout the Bay Area, and Sutter health
Minimum Position Requirements

Bachelor's degree in Business Administration, Health Administration, Public Health or relative field is required
Master's degree preferred in Business Administration, Health Administration, Public Health or related field

Minimum five years of experience required in consulting, operations or project management ideally in a health care setting, ten years preferred
Experience with business process improvement and the tools and data requirements for supporting an effective business process improvement project

Minimum 5 years of healthcare-related executive administrative and project support role management

Expert knowledge (broad expertise or unique knowledge) of policies, practices and systems in a healthcare environment

Knowledge of health care operations/ health care delivery, project management, and quality improvement is required

Demonstrated ability to determine key business issues and develop appropriate action plans from multidisciplinary perspectives
Proven performance in strategic/operational analysis and planning, analytical techniques, financial and market assessments
Excellent leadership skills in project management and consulting. Must exhibit efficiency, collaboration, candor, openness and results orientation.
  • Superior communication, consulting, facilitation, negotiation, conflict management, problem resolution, change management skills and consensus building skills

Requires travel throughout the organization 10-50% of the time, typically day trips but could also be evening and overnight dependent on location
