These steps can be completed Monday through Friday between 8AM and 4PM at the Muscatine County Jail public lobby area on 400 Walnut Street Muscatine Iowa.
Maintains order and discipline in the Muscatine County jail through enforcing rules and regulations among inmates held in the facility while assuring a safe and clean environment for the inmates and officers.
Monitors all actions and movements of inmates through direct cellblock surveillance, intercom, and video systems; mediates any disturbances in the cells; monitors inmates during exercise period; monitors inmates and visitors during visitation hours.
Inspects the blocks and cells to detect any contraband or unauthorized possessions; periodically searches the blocks for weapons, drugs, fire hazards, and tampering with locks, fire doors, or windows; performs exterior checks for broken windows and other signs of destruction or escape attempts. Performs fire evacuations and other emergency procedures, such as CPR, First Aid, etc., as required.
Receives and processes all prisoners in the jail; performs an initial search for contraband or weapons; removes all property and money from the person, counts out the possessions in front of the person, and stores all property.
Processes booking paperwork for the inmate including fingerprinting and photographing the person; places individual in a holding cell; if the person is to be held, he/she showers and is given; clothing, bedding, and toiletries and then placed in a cell.
Dispenses medication to the inmates according to prescriptions and the orders of a doctor; ensures all medication is the proper amount and dosage and the inmate takes all medication prescribed; opens, reads, logs, distributes incoming and outgoing mail; excluding privileged correspondence, and distributes other items requested by inmates.
Distributes meals and collects all trays and utensils once the meal is completed; oversees cell cleaning and the removal of trash
Writes reports on any occurrences during shift; updates jail log; types cell assignment sheet, copies, and distributes; files fingerprint cards, court orders, and other paperwork in inmate folders. Collects request forms from inmates then resolves them applying inmate rules and jail policy.
Transports inmates to the hospital or to court; check work release inmates in and out daily; completes paperwork for the release of inmates and property.
Performs custodial duties; makes minor repairs; collects dirty laundry and issues clean bedding and uniforms; washes, dries, and folds laundry. Performs cleanup after meals and maintains cleanliness in all staff work areas as needed.
Performs other related duties as required.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS REQUIRED:
Education and Experience:
High school diploma or equivalent.
No experience required.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
Methods, techniques, and procedures used in controlling and disciplining inmates.
Modern principles of criminology and penology.
Federal, state, and county rules and regulations, policies, and laws governing jails.
Legal requirements and approved methods of: guarding, restraining, and transporting inmates.
Law enforcement vehicles and equipment.
Preventative vehicle maintenance.
Basic computer skills.
Meet minimum state requirements for correctional officers.
Understand and carry our oral and written instructions.
React quickly and calmly in stressful situations.
Control a large group of inmates.
Transport inmates in a safe and efficient manner.
In the care and use of firearms and non-lethal weapons.
Physical and Mental Abilities:
Work produces mental and visual fatigue due to sustained periods of concentration, working under pressure, and continual interruptions in concentration.
Physical ability to lift medium articles, sometimes weighing up to 75 pounds maximum and carrying of objects weighing up to 75 pounds; pushing and/or pulling objects weighing up to 150 pounds maximum. These limits do not apply when physically controlling persons.
Physical ability to apprehend and strength to sustain dominance over unruly persons is occasionally required.
Substantial amount of physical effort and manual dexterity required.
Visual acuity sufficient to perform; inspections, searches, maintain security, identify persons and objects at a reasonable distance, and observe details of incidents. Accurate color vision.
Working time may require irregular hours and shift times.
Work is performed in a highly regulated institutional environment, and some time is spent exposed to life-threatening situations such as violent inmates.
Work is performed in a highly regulated institutional environment, with some exposure to outdoor temperatures and driving a vehicle in moderate to heavy traffic.
